Branch 115, whose patroness is Lina Kostenko, was founded in 1980 by a group of young Ukrainian American women, who sought to promote art and culture of Ukraine through the sponsorship of art exhibits. The first president of the Branch was Irene Baranyk, who served from 1980 to 1983. In 1989 Branch 115 was revitalized under the presidency of Kvitka Szwajkun. Through the efforts of its twelve active members, the Branch promoted Ukrainian culture through exhibits at arts fairs across southeastern Michigan, including the Art on the Point exhibition in Grosse Pointe, Brighton Art Festival, Arts and Apples Fair, and the prestigious Ann Arbor Art Fair. The Branch presented works of such Ukrainian artists as Roman Kohut, Nusia Voropkevych, and pysanky by Roman Seniuk. K. Szwajkun served as the president of Branch 115 from 1989 to the mid 1990s, followed by Isya Stadnyk, who served for two years. At the end of her term K.Szwajkun resumed the presidency until 1998. In January 2000 Lydia Kolodchin, former president of the Detroit Regional Council of UNWLA, brought together eight women to join a branch that was being reorganized in Detroit. During our first meeting in late February, about twenty women-mothers and young professionals, came together to see how they can best contribute their precious time toward the betterment of our Ukrainian community. At that meeting Dr. Nadia Shalauta Juzych was elected president of the Branch, with Lily Litynskyj and Genevieve Mursky serving as vice-presidents, along with Katya Beswerchij, treasurer, and Elizabeth Kuczer - secretary. There are more then twenty active members in the Branch, whose work is focused on education of children and the introduction of Ukrainian culture to the general public. In the two years since its revitalization, Branch 115 has distinguished itself through very active participation of its members in various community activities. For the past two years the Branch has sponsored a pysanka decorating workshop for children, which was attended by 56 youngsters in 2000 and 94 in 2001. A five day Ukrainian Art Camp, attended by 40 children, featured Ukrainian crafts, including making of gerdany, embroidery, and painting pottery with Trypillian designs, among other crafts. The members of Branch 115 have also participated in international festivals such as the Troy 318 XXVI Конвенція СУА www.unwla.org
