gressman Christopher H. Smith was Prime Sponsor of H.R. 3244, a bill that became Public Law 106-386 signed by President Bill Clinton on October 28, 2000 under the title: Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act of 2000. UNWLA Social Welfare and Scholarship programs have always been dear to the hearts of the members. From the beginning the Branch has been sponsoring a student, first in Brazil, and currently, one in Ukraine. Many of the Branch members also sponsor students individually. The Branch has generously helped those in need in Ukraine by sending packages to families in the Chornobyl region, to orphanages, and most recently by donating funds to the flood-ravaged region of Zakarpattia. The Branch has begun to focus on the concerns of the Ukrainian Americans in our area. Our members have signed up as volunteer translators at the Bayshore Community Hospital in Holmdel, NJ since there are members fluent in Spanish, Portuguese, German, and of course Ukrainian. On December 1, 2001, the Branch officially opened the Ukrainian Information Service. The aim of this service is to provide information to the Ukrainian American community in the state of New Jersey. At this time the project is in the beginning stages of gathering information, starting with the New Jersey Regional Council, UNWLA branches in New Jersey, religious institutions, and other organizations and State services. The information will be dispensed through a toll free telephone number. As this historical write-up comes to a conclusion, there is the usual reflection on were we have been and where we are going. In the year 2002 the Branch will be in existence for fourteen years and has seen its membership grow from the original ten to twenty-five members. In those years we have been fulfilling all obligations to UNWLA headquarters and to the Regional Council. We can be proud of our 100% subscription to Our Life with an additional four issues going to Ukraine. The Branch is a member of the Ukrainian Museum in New York City, as are several individual members from the Branch. Periodically, articles about Branch activities have been published in Our Life and The Ukrainian Weekly. The Branch was the subject of an article in the Asbury Park Press in 1991 regarding the Ukrainian American community’s response to Chornobyl and Ukraine’s striving for independence. We have participated in every UNWLA Convention since 1990 and look forward to the next one. As we enter a bright new millennium, we are certain that in the future UNWLA and Branch 98 will continue their commitment to the charitable, cultural, and educational endeavors, that have been the cornerstone of the organization from its beginning.
