Post 30, as well as co-sponsoring a bus trip to Atlantic City, NJ. As enjoyable as all these activities were, the most successful event that has also become a Branch tradition is the annual Christmas covered-dish dinner. As the years moved on, so did Branch activity. The focus then became to inform the general public about the Ukrainian community in its area. The Branch chose to demonstrate the unique qualities of the Ukrainian American community by organizing library exhibits. These exhibits which began in 1990 covered such interests as traditional arts and crafts, costumes, art, jewelry, literature, and history. The last successful exhibit held in 1997 was titled "Ukrainian Media: Finding Facts about Historical and Contemporary Ukraine”. The displays were featured in various local libraries as well as in the Mommouth County Library headquarters in Manalapan, NJ and its Eastern Branch in Shrewsbury, NJ. The Branch then focused on providing the libraries with the information about Ukraine and Ukrainians by donating books and other materials. In the summer of 2000, the Branch donated Ukraine a History by Orest Subtelny, Our Life magazines, and UNWLA Convention books to the Reference Department of the Manalapan, NJ library. The Branch also donated The Sky Unwashed by Irene Zabytko to the Holmdel Public Library. In recent years the Branch has focused on more community involvement. In January 1990 and 1991, the Branch was instrumental in having the Middletown, NJ mayor and governing body issue proclamations recognizing Ukrainian Independence Day. The Branch also sponsored a letter writing campaign to help the Ukrainian American Veterans receive a federal charter. Then the Branch turned its attention to organizing lectures and conferences for the public. A lecture given by Branch member and practicing podiatrist Dr. Margaret Zakanycz Putykewycz entitled “Good Foot Health” was not only informative, but was well attended. The next Branch project was coordinating two conferences entitled “The Trafficking in Women in Our Backyard”. The first was held in Matawan, NJ, while the second conference was held in the Eastern Branch of the Monmouth County Library in Shrewsbury, NJ. The Library provided a room and advertising to the event. With guest speakers Bozhena Olshaniwsky, Luba Bilowchtchuk, and Walter Zalizko, these conferences brought attention to the problem that exists actually in our very own backyards. A video of the “NBC Dateline” program of April 28, 2000 hosted by Maria Shriver was incorporated into the conferences, detailing the plight of women from Ukraine who are victims of sexual enslavement. The highlight of the lecture was the announcement that New Jersey Con XXVI Конвенція СУА 301 www.unwla.org
