UNWLA BRANCH 12, OLENA PCHILKA Patroness, CLEVELAND, OH OHIO REGION Branch 12- “Vyshyvani Vechornytsi - 2000" Branch 12 of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America, Inc., was founded on March 19,1967. Olena Pchilka was chosen as the Branch patron. During the thirty-five years of existence, the number of members in our Branch varied. At the present time we have twenty-nine members. Not all members are active in the Branch. Over the years the Branch had thirteen presidents. Branch 12 is a member of the Ohio Regional Council. Several of our members and the Branch president serve on the Board of the Council. In September of last year they participated in the planning of a banquet to mark the 25th anniversary of The Ukrainian Museum in New York City. This event raised $25,500 for the Museum. Our Branch organized a “Svitlychka” and its first session was held on September 16,1973. Over the years more than 450 children took part in this educational program. Currently, there are eleven students - five girls and six boys enrolled in the “Svitlychka”. Three classes are held each week and the teacher is Nadia Russenko. Philanthropic work is the focus of our Branch. Packages with clothing, food and money are being sent to needy families in Ukraine on a continuous basis. The Branch supports the “Grandmother Fund”, as well as the “Milk and Bun Fund". At this time we are supporting five students through the UNWLA Scholarship Fund. The sponsors are three Branch members and one non-member. Our Ways and Means Committee organizes a variety of events to boost our budget. One such event is an Art Show, held the first weekend in October. It has become popular in our area and people look forward to it. Another successful project was the publication of two Ukrainian cookbooks - “Selected Recipes for the Winter Season” (1978) and “Selected Recipes for Spring and Summer” (1982). Over 6,000 copies of these books have been sold. Presently, only the book with recipes for the winter season is available. Members of our Branch are also active in other areas of our community. They participate in schools of Ukrainian studies, in “Fight for Sight”, “Plast”, “SUMA”, Ukrainian radio programs, church choirs, and others. 196 XXVI Конвенцій СУА www.unwla.org
