They are specifically given in order to upgrade the methodology of teaching the Ukrainian language to professionals in that field. We strongly believe that the unifying force of all Ukrainians in the world is their mother language - the Ukrainian language. This is the best way to cultivate it. USA - Scholarships are awarded to the members of the UNWLA from the Eva Stashkiw Fund. Eva Stashkiw was a member of UNWLA Branch 17 in Miami, Florida, and in her Last Will and Testament she named UNWLA as beneficiary. A Memorial Eva Stashkiw Fund was established, interest from which is used for scholarships. UNWLA Scholarship Program is the administrator of this fund, and UNWLA Executive Committee makes the final decision in approving the applications. UNWLA Branch 17 receives $500.00 annually, and another $100.00 is sent for the perpetual care of her grave. During the course of the last three years the recipients were Oksana Biskup, member of the UNWLA Branch 3 in Arizona, and Aleksandra Isayevych Mason, UNWLA Member-at-large. We also receive applications from students from Ukraine studying in the USA. Due to the lack of funds and sponsors we cannot help all of them. UNWLA Scholarship Program/Children-Student Sponsor ship Program does not have a general scholarship fund - the sponsor donations are fully paid to their students and more often than not we use other donations for scholarships. Donations for administrative expenses should cover the cost of running our program. All of the Memorial and Endowments Funds are documented and we must adhere to the Last Will and Testaments and/or written Agreements of the benefactors, as required by the IRS law. In the last three years I was invited and visited the following: July 28 - August 14, 2000 - trip to Brazil October 21, 2000 - Conference of the UNWLA Regional Council in New York November 26, 2000 - “Sojuzanka Day" of the UNWLA Regional Council of New Jersey December 10, 2000 - UNWLA Branch 98, Holmdel/Middletown, NJ March 10,2001 - UNWLA Regional Council in Chicago, Annual Meeting April 4, 2001 - UNWLA Branch 4, New Brunswick, New Jersey August 7 - August 22, 2001 - Trip to Ukraine November 9, 2001 - UNWLA Branch 70, Passaic, New Jersey In addition to the above, I have written a short history of the UNWLA Scholarship Program in English and Ukrainian languages for a press release commemorating UNWLA 75th Anniversary. UNWLA Scholarship Program 1993-2001. Also, two circulars were sent to all the UNWLA Branches. In the year 2002, the UNWLA Scholarship Program is celebrating its 35th Anniversary of continuous fully volunteer activity in helping students in the USA, the Diaspora and Ukraine. I am extremely grateful that I had the opportunity to serve as chairwoman of this program for the last nine years. I have worked with conviction and extreme satisfaction in helping students attain an education, numerous diplomas and diverse trades. This is demonstrated by the various degrees in many disciplines. Through education our former scholarship recipients have become well rounded citizens in their respective countries. It was a great honor for me to serve as chair of the UNWLA Scholarship/Children - Student Sponsorship Program since 1993, and I shall always remember it with great pride and joy. 128 XXVI Конвенція СУА www.unwla.org
