Branch 124, St. Petersburg, FI. Branch 85, Chicago. New members, Branch 49, Buffalo , NY. Branch 27, Pittsburg, PA. It soon became apparent that member “retention” was even more of a challenge than member recruitment. Several branches and re gional councils were faltering and required assis tance. Some responded to our interventions and now are thriving: Branch 124 (St. Petersburg, Florida), Branch 49 (Buffalo), and Branch 10 (Philadelphia), as well as the Ohio Regional Council. What they all had in common was the emergence of leadership and/or the passion of a select few to continue the work of their pre decessors. Branches with dwindling member ships merged (for example, Detroit’s Branch 63 with Branch 26). We congratulate and salute each of you for this! Unfortunately, other branches dissolved for various reasons, mostly due to age and health issues: Branch 47 (Rochester), Branches 28 and 100 (New Jersey), Branch 89 (New York). We mourn these losses and regret that not enough was done to recruit replacements among daughters, daughters-in-law, and granddaughters to sustain the viability of such historic branches. On a positive note many members from dissolved branches transferred to Members-at- Large status and continue to pay dues and maintain subscriptions to Our Life. Another important aspect of membership retention is the formal recognition of contribu tions and accomplishments at all levels of the organization. Through the “Voices of History” project, we paid tribute to the pillars of our organization—those on whom we conferred honorary membership. Videotaped interviews were conducted and archived for those pochesni chlenky (honorary members) who were able to participate: Irena Kashubynska (33), Iwanna Martynec (56), Maria Nawarynska (56), Maria Chiminec (56), Dr. Joanna Ratych (56), Iwanna Szkarupa (33), and Lida Kolodchin (76). An acknowledgement is highly due the dedicated interviewers: Orysia Zinycz (56), Daria Fedoriw (12), and Daria Jakubowycz (130). Certificates commemorating important anniversaries and events were presented, either by me or other officers of the Executive Com mittee, to: ❖ Detroit Regional Council - 75th anniversary ❖ Branch 1 (New York) - 85th anniversary ❖ Branch 49 (Buffalo) - 75th anniversary ♦♦♦ Branch 29 (Chicago) - 50th anniversary XXIX Конвенція СУА 93 www.unwla.org
