UNWLA President Marianna Zajac, Professor Valentyna K. Borysenko, and UNWLA First Vice President Ulana Zinych during the presentation of “A Candle in Remembrance ” at the UNWLA’s 85 1 anniversary celebration. the work at the celebration of the 85th anniversary of the UNWLA. In their joint preface to A Candle in Re membrance, UNWLA Honorary President Iryna Kurowyckyj and President Marianna Zajac noted: Dr. Valentyna Borysenko *s Svicha Pa- miaty was published in Ukraine in 2007. Shortly thereafter, the First Lady o f Ukraine and President o f the International Humanitarian Fund 3000, Kateryna Yushchenko requested that the UNWLA undertake the translation o f this book into English. In her letter to the UNWLA, the First Lady expressed her hopes that an English-language translation o f the eyewitness testimonies o f survivors would provide a more complete picture o f the suffering o f the Ukrainian people during the Holodomor and encourage the world community to recognize the Famine as a genocide . All of those involved in the Candle project hope that the mission has been accomplished. Convention Book After A Candle in Remembrance was completed and published, I planned on taking a “well- deserved” rest, however, my favorite organization had other plans for me. I was appointed to chair the Editorial Committee of the UNWLA’s Convention Book. My committee included the following individuals: Oxana Farion, who made an invaluable contribution; Vice President Halyna Romanyshyn; Secretary Daria Drozdovska; Chrystyna Melnyk; Zoriana Haftkowycz; and Zoriana’s husband Mykola Darmochwal, who provided special IT assistance. I am deeply grateful to each and every one of these people. My sincere gratitude also goes to Tamara Stadnychenko for her English-language editing, to Lidia Slysh for Ukrainian editing, to Iryna Koshulap for translations, and to Marie Duplak of Computoprint for sharing her expertise and for her patience. I must also thank Maria Tomorug, who kindly and willingly typed several of the long handwritten reports that were submitted to the committee. O f course, there would be no Convention Book without the valuable contributions of our UNWLA members. After three years, it is difficult to remember everything, and it is even more difficult to put it in writing, but you did it—and mostly without complaints. In the end, once again I would like to thank all who helped me carry out my work during the past 3 years. My sincere gratitude to the delegates of the XXVIII Convention who elected me for this position, displaying their trust in me.
