Letters As you may know, federal employees as, well as military personnel, have an opportunity to make tax-deductible donations to various charity organizations, the UNWLA among them, through the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC). Thus, among my responsibilities was writing thank-you letters to people who donated money to our organization through the CFC, showing our gratitude to them and letting them know we appreciate their donations. Visiting and Working with Regional Councils At the annual meeting of the UNWLA National Board in 2009, the need to establish more efficient communication between the UNWLA Executive Board and all Regional Councils was discussed. Every member of the Executive Board was assigned a Regional Council, with which they were to ensure communication and offer assistance, when and if needed. I was assigned to work with the Chicago Regional Council. As a part of this initiative, I succeeded in co-opting Tanya Yatsenkiv, a member of this Regional Council, as a representative to this year’s National Board meeting, which took place in October 2010 . In the summer of 2010, along with UNWLA Vice President for Membership Anna Macielinski, I had the opportunity to visit the Ohio Regional Council and attend their annual meeting as our president’s representative. I was pleased to have this opportunity. The meeting was quite successful with close to 30 ladies participating. They are a group of generous, hard working women representing many generations, all working to support our organization. Their preschool is state of the art. I visited the area’s beautiful cultural park, the Cleveland Cultural Gardens, which houses a graceful bronze monument to Lesia Ukrainka—the work of the renowned sculptor Michael Chereshniowsky. We are sincerely grateful to the UNWLA Ohio Regional Council for erecting this monument. On March 27, 2011, I represented our president at the 50th anniversary of Branch 29 in Chicago. I felt warmly accepted by all. The anniversary luncheon was well attended, underscoring the respect and love the branch holds from within the community. The branch members are generous, motivated, hardworking, and talented (what excellent bakers and decorators and fund raisers!) At the onset of their branch formation, these women organized a preschool “Sadok Kazok.” After 25 years of successfully teaching our “young ones” about their rich Ukrainian heritage, they turned the preschool over to Branch 85, under whose direction it still flourishes. In my opinion, the highlight of the affair was a presentation by the children from this “Sadochok.” Kudos, ladies. Social Welfare Endeavors In 20 0 9 ,1 worked with Iryna Rudyk, the UNWLA Social Welfare Chair, to buy and ship Sterilite boxes to Kyiv. The initiative was launched at the request of Lilia Horodyska, a young Ukrainian American who worked in Kyiv and came up with the idea of using Sterilite boxes for protecting the food and clothes from bad weather and pests. She wrote to the UNWLA an email asking for this donation, which we were happy to honor. Based on Ms. Horodyska’s request, we sent 28 large 116-quart storage bins. These were shipped to Father Ihor Onyshkevych at St. Nicolas the Wonderworker Church at XXIXКонвенція СУА 85 Annual meeting of Ohio Regional Council.
