Mission would be on the entity’s Executive Board. The ambassador encouraged and invited Ukrainian women’s organizations in the diaspora, including UNWLA, to participate in this new opportunity. The 55th session of The Commission on the Status of Women (“CSW”) was held at the United Nations February 22 through March 4, 2011. This commission is dedicated exclusively to gender equality and the advancement of women. On February 23, prior to a CSW session held by the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations (WFUWO), Ambassador Sergeyev invited selected UNWLA and other Ukrainian diaspora organization representatives to a gathering at the Ukrainian Mission to the UN in order to present and discuss Ukraine’s role in the newly formed UN Women as well as to discuss future plans for a Chornobyl conference planned for April 26-27, 2011. The WFUWO workshop, which several UNWLA members attended, was entitled “Women and Girls in Science and Tech nology: Obstacles overcome, goals achieved” and explored the effects of patriarchal so cieties in defining women's and girls’ roles. Representatives of Ukrainian organizations from the United States and Canada with the Ambassador to the United Nations, His Excellency Yurij Sergeyev (February 23, 2011). U.S. Government In 2009 Melanne Verveer, a UNWLA member at large, was elected for a key U.S. State Department post— Ambassador at Large for Global Women’s Issues. Melanne Verveer is co-founder, chair and co-CEO of Vital Voices Global Partnership, an international nonprofit that invests in emerging women leaders. I wrote a letter of congratulations to Ambassador Verveer and expressed the desire to work with her on issues of importance to the women of Ukraine. NATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN I participated in the biannual NCW Board meeting held on June 26, 2010. At the request of Mary Singletary, NCW president, I submitted a short history and current mission summary of the UNWLA for a booklet to be published about the NCW member organizations. I invited UNWLA Executive Committee members to represent us at Board meeting conference calls held on September 16, 2010 and February 3, 2011. The February 2011 conference call was in preparation for the United Nations 55th Commission on the Status of Women described above. I continue to attend NCW events when possible. GENERAL FEDERATION OF WOMEN’S CLUBS The UNWLA is a member of this international women's organization and, at my invitation, Ulana Hlynsky, Liaison for our Branches at Large, attended GFWC’s annual event on March 10, 2011, the GFWC Women's History Month Celebration Reception. Needless to say, many more events were attended, greetings were both written and given for various occasions (please excuse me if I have omitted any in error), other conference phone calls were attended, many options for possible projects discussed. Please read the reports of each of National Board members within this convention book for a full picture of the past three years’ work. 78 XXIX Конвенція СУА www.unwla.org
