In August 2009, the WCU annual meeting was held at the Lviv University Polytechnic Institute. In this year’s annual report, I emphasized the work of our branches across the United States during the past year in commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Great Famine of 1932-1933. One of the highlights of the WCU conference was the visit and the speech of then Prime Minister of Ukraine, Yulia Tymoshenko, who invited the WCU Board of Directors to an impromptu reception at Vysokyi Zamok in Lviv. It is interesting to note that most of the participating diaspora organizations are now centered around communities of the latest immigration leaving Ukraine. On August 22 & 23, 2010, the WCU annual conference took place in Peremyshl, Poland. It was the first WCU meeting held on European soil outside of Ukraine. Opening ceremonies were held on the premises of the Narodnyi Dim (National Home), which was built by the Ukrainian community of Peremyshl in 1904. The Ukrainians in Poland continue to encounter difficulties in sustaining and advancing their identity. UNWLA’s report appears on pages 263-266 on UWC’s website: http://www.ukrainianworld congress.org/RZZ2010/Zvity/Book2010.pdf. On Saturday, August 22, 2010, an excursion was arranged for a solemn Mass and the blessing of a me morial in the village of Horaiets, approximately 100 kilometers outside of Pere myshl. On April 6, 1945, 174 Ukrainian men, women and children were shot to death by Polish soldiers in this quiet village. As WFUWO delegates, I and the President of the Ukrainian Women’s League of Poland, Kateryna Sirotska, placed a wreath at the foot of the memorial in memory of these innocent villagers. The World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations (WFUWO) was founded in November 1948 in the United States. The UNWLA was a co-founder of this international federation, which today consists of 23 nonprofit women’s organizations from 12 countries spanning four continents. In September 2008, 1 traveled to Toronto, Canada, to celebrate WFUWO’s 60th anniversary and the 45th anniversary of its quarterly magazine, Ukrainka v Sviti. President Maria Szkambara and her committee graciously welcomed me as a representative of WFUWO’s largest member organization. WFUWO’s 2009 annual meeting took place on August 18 and 19 at the Lviv University Polytechnic Institute. I was invited to participate in the roundtable discussion dealing with methods to ensure the future of WFUWO magazine Ukrainka v Sviti. Although our first obligation and loyalty must be to Our Life, I encouraged and still encourage each UNWLA branch to purchase an annual subscription to Ukrainka v Sviti as a means of keeping our membership apprised of Ukrainian women’s organizations around the world— how different and yet how similar we are. In 2010, the annual WFUWO meeting began on August 19 with Divine Liturgy celebrated in the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in the historic city of Peremyshl, Poland, located on the River Sian. During the opening formalities, it was confirmed that representatives were present from 9 countries: the United States, Canada, Lithuania, France, Great Britain, Estonia, Poland, Germany, and Ukraine. The discussions during this annual gathering circled around “The role and assignment of the Ukrainian women’s movement in today’s Ukraine” and “The cooperation of WFUWO’s member organizations with A group of delegates and hosts of the 2010 Annual Conference of the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations.
