rFC Campaign Dr Oksana Xenos, our parliamentarian, initiated the Combined Federal Campaign and continues to submit required annual updated reports to ensure that the UNWLA remains eligible for donations both from federal government employees and military personnel. Information on the CFC campaign is available on our website. Our Social Welfare Chairperson Iryna Rudyk and I work together to provide Dr. Xenos with the annual required information. First Vice President Ulana Zinych is responsible for writing thank you emails or letters to CFC contributors (when contributor details are given, as some prefer to remain anonymous). In 2009, the UNWLA received $24,004 and in 2010, $22,909 in CFC contributions. These funds are not designated for a specific project and are being partially used to help cover recurring building maintenance expenses at UNLWA headquarters in New York City. The Great Famine of 1932-1933 The day after I returned from the XXVIII Convention, the International Holodomor Torch arrived at Manhattan’s Battery Park, and I joined the New York Regional Council in a “Walk against Genocide,” which ended at the Ukrainian Museum, for the opening of an extensive and moving Holodomor exhibit. Because the UNWLA played an integral, extensive and vital role during the tragic time of the Great Famine of 1932— 1933, our organization and its membership continued its role in bringing this genocide to the world’s attention during the 75th anniversary of the Holodomor. On November 15, 2008, Honorary President Iryna Kurowyckyj and I led the annual traditional march to St Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City. Because of the persistence of the U.S. National Holodomor Committee, of which the UNWLA is a member, a plot of land one block from the very busy Union train station in Washington, D.C., was designated for a memorial to the victims of the Holodomor. On December 2, 2008, I attended the groundbreaking and blessing of this well located plot. Ukraine’s First Lady at the time, Kateryna Yushchenko, singled out the UNWLA’s efforts during the Great Famine, emphasizing our organization’s efforts in informing and seeking out the aid and assistance of U.S. and international governments and charitable organizations. On November 14, 2009, and November 20, 2010, I participated in the Commemorative Masses held annually at St Patrick’s Cathedral, New York City. In April 2010, Fourth VP Christine Melnyk and I sent an open letter to the President of Ukraine, Victor Yanukovych, expressing our organization’s great dismay at the fact that Holodomor information had been removed from the official Presidential website. In addition, the importance of the completion of the Holodomor memorial in Washington, D.C. was strongly emphasized. Neither a reply nor acknowled gement was received. On December 3, 2010, Ukraine’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations held its annual Holodomor commemoration under the title “Food Security for all generations, lessons of the past: Remembering those who perished in the Holodomor in Ukraine, 1932-33, and victims of all other artificial famines of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.” After this year’s commemoration (held in the format of a concert-requiem), I and other UNWLA members were given the opportunity to share information about A Candle in Remembrance to interested participants after the program. The UNWLA continues its active participation in the U.S. Committee for Ukrainian Holodomor- Genocide Awareness 1932-33 and all its conference calls as the committee now prepares for the 80th anniversary of the Famine of 1932-1933 in 2012. UNWLA Honorary President Iryna Kurowyckyj and President Marianna Zajac leading the traditional march to St. Patrick’s Cathedral. XXIX Конвенція СУА 73 www.unwla.org
