Our new office administrator, Olha Stasiuk, joined us in February 2010. She comes to us with much community work-based experience. Ms Stasiuk is experienced in database maintenance and other software packages and has restructured our office database for optimal use and access by all members of the National Board. Ms Stasiuk makes every effort to accommodate Board member requests— for instance, she scans annual reports and e-mails them to the National Board allowing for convenient review on a timely basis. Olha has reorganized our office and is the epitome of efficiency. We are fortunate to have her as UNWLA office manager and administrator. Over the weekend of August 28-29, 2010, UNWLA headquarters in New York City suffered damages from a fire in the stairwell of the fifth floor. The UNWLA’s conference rooms had ceiling and floor water damage but all of the files, books, records, and equipment in the office areas were spared due to the protection of the fire door to our office area. Unfortunately, the stairwell and elevator damage limited access to the UNWLA offices and forced us to close the facility until repairs were completed. Our office administrator was able to finally move back into our offices at the beginning of March 2011. The good news is that no one was hurt and that the daily operations of the UNWLA offices continued as usual but at a temporary location. We would like to thank our membership for its understanding and patience during this time. Roma Shuhan, UNWLA Financial Secretary, played an extremely vital role in the months after the accident, making herself available to handle a myriad of details in the entire reconstruction process. She was indispensable in facilitating this difficult process. I sincerely thank her for her many hours of work and positive cooperation. As of November 30, 2010, the rental of the public storage unit in New Jersey, which had been housing old printed matter, was canceled. The monthly cost of this rental had escalated over the years to $ 120/month and could not be justified. Archive Committee Chair Olha Trytyak, Olya Drozdowycz (Branch 95 member), and I , with the help of my husband and Olya Drozdowycz’s husband, sorted the paperwork, packaged some for transportation back to our office, and discarded that which we felt would be of no future use. I would like to thank everyone for their help in this back-breaking effort. Ukrainian Museum in New York City As the Museum’s first vice president, I have taken an active role in the Museum’s life by attending monthly Executive Committee meetings held the first Monday of every month as well as the Museum’s Board of Trustees meetings, which are held quarterly. In June 2008, UNWLA’s Art & Museum Chair, Zoriana Haftkowycz, represented me at this meeting. The next annual meeting was held on June 13, 2009, UNWLA Art/Museum Chairwoman Zoriana Haftkowycz, already a Museum Board member, was elected Museum Treasurer. In my remarks at the opening of the historic exhibit Ukraine-Sweden at the crossroads of history (XVII-XVIII centuries) on April 24, 2010, I reminded attendees that the founding of the Ukrainian Museum in 1976 could be attributed to the vision of UNWLA leadership and UNWLA’s president at that time, Iwanna Rozankowsky, as well as to the commitment of the organization’s Board and membership. The General Director of the National Museum of the History of Ukraine reflects in the exhibit catalogue that “The past of every country and every nation identifies in the historical memory with those periods and events of the epoch, which with time do not lose their relevance and educational value.” Keeping these words in mind, we can easily apply this to the historical decision made at the UNWLA’s 17th Convention, and shortly thereafter when two floors at 203 Second Avenue in New York City were purchased to house, protect, and display the folk art collection procured by the UNWLA in 1933 . . . and such was the beginning of the history of this institution which never loses its relevance and certainly holds an important educational role in the Ukrainian community. On December 5, 2010, I had the honor of officially opening the exhibit entitled “ Invitation to a Wedding: Ukrainian Wedding Textiles and Traditions. ” In summary, since 1976, the membership of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America has been extremely dedicated and invaluable to this fine institution. UNWLA members have volunteered countless hours; they’ve donated their own valuable artwork to the Museum, handcrafted items for the gift shop, and obviously made very generous financial contributions toward this valuable entity. We thank our membership for its continued support! 72 XXIX Конвенція СУА www.unwla.org
