While this project is ongoing, our Social Welfare Chairperson and I have always encouraged our membership to remember the seniors in their own communities. We know from their reporting that the Philadelphia, Detroit, and New Jersey Regional Councils, as well as some individual branches, conduct annual “Easter & Christmas Outreach” programs that embrace senior citizens and others in need. We congratulate and thank them for these efforts. The 25 th anniversary of Chornobyl. Since that dreadful day of April 26, 1986, the UNWLA has been involved in bringing awareness to the world about this tragic event and its victims and had established the UNWLA Chornobyl Fund to aid the most fragile and defenseless segment of the population, Ukraine’s children. UNWLA Honorary Member Mary Beck very generously supported the UNWLA Chornobyl Fund. (For the record, in March 2009, an additional $113,463 was received from the estate of Mary Beck.) A new Social Welfare initiative, which is clearly in the spirit of Mary Beck, will be announced at this, the UNWLA’s XXIX Convention. I have been determined to find a new project in Ukraine— one which can be monitored, is transparent, and can be tangibly measured. The reality is that identifying a Chornobyl victim has become more difficult and less reliable as the years have gone by. It is now 25 years since the tragic accident, and the lines have become blurred. Yet, the UNWLA has been given a generous gift from Mary Beck and these hard-earned, given-in-love funds must be wisely distributed for we believe that they were not saved and donated to UNWLA to rest in a bank account. On April 2 6 ,1 was invited to participate at the 20th Conference at the United Nations on Health and Environment: Global Partners for Global Solutions, on the theme, “Nuclear Energy: History Revisited.”I presented a statement on UNWLA’s efforts following the Chornobyl disaster until today. A question and answer period followed. This conference was organized by the World Information Transfer Agency and the Ukrainian Mission to the United Nations. In 2009, UNWLA received a bequest of $32,633.24 from the estate of Gloria Muenks of the state of Missouri. These funds are to be utilized for the children of the orphanages in the Lviv region of Ukraine. We are still in the process of researching the most efficient way to use this gift. In September 2009, UNWLA received a letter from Irene Zabytko, the author of The Sky Unwashed and When Luba Leaves Home. In her letter, Ms Zabytko requested support for the production of a documentary file {Life in the Dead Zone) featuring three elderly women survivors living in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone. On September 12, 2009, the Executive Board passed the proposal. Our agreement with Ms Zabytko clearly states that since the UNWLA/Mary Beck Chornobyl Fund was the source for this funding, UNWLA/Mary Beck support will be acknowledged in all film credits and any related promotional materials. At the Executive Board meeting of January 23, 2010, it was voted that our organization donate $1,000 to the victims of the earthquake in Haiti through the American Red Cross. As members of the world community, it was felt that we should support the victims of the monumental tragedy in one of the poorest countries of the North American continent. Website Our bilingual website has become one of the paramount forms of communication as it is always ready to share branch, Regional Council, or National Board information with potential readers. Any actions taken by the Board (for instance, open letter to the President of Ukraine or farewell letter to Cardinal Lubomyr Husar) have been posted on the website at the time they are mailed. On the other hand, organizational information, such as information about the UNWLA by-laws, is available for membership as are Our Life indexes. In addition, all branches are invited to post their upcoming events on the website. Many branches have learned how simple this process is and have repeatedly been taking advantage of this venue. Our dynamic and fluid website is a definite success due to Zoriana Haftkowycz, UNWLA’s webmaster. (Please read Ms Haftowycz’s report.) UNWLA Administration Mrs. Natalia Duma, who had worked with much dedication for the UNWLA for over 30 years, retired in 2010. We express our deepest gratitude to Mrs. Duma for her many years of service. She knew and understood the needs of our membership so well! We wish her good health in her retirement.
