Ms Stasiuk also emails the monthly labels to Computoprint (publisher of OL). We would like to thank Oxana Farion for her work in initially creating and maintaining the database. This consolidation has saved a duplication of effort and has streamlined the process. Even though Press Fund donations have somewhat decreased since 2007, they still remain strong (approximately $40,000 for 2010). Because of these steps, Our Life magazine has been in the black for the past three years. Any extra monies in the Press Fund will be used in our planned book project—an English-language history of the UNWLA. This project has been discussed for many years, but we hope it will come to fruition during the next term. For the past year, Masha (Maria Muchyn) Archer, the renowned jewelry artist has taken the first monthly ad on the inside cover of Our Life to advertise her “art-to-wear jewelry.” I personally thank her for her financial support of our magazine and wish her continued success. Although we must be and are mindful of the restrictions placed on the not-for-profit bulk mailing rates, we encourage other businesses and establishments to support Our Life through advertising. In 2009, our beloved magazine reached another milestone— its 65th anniversary! We thank you for your support since we will all agree that our magazine is an important vehicle for sharing our activities and accomplishments with the world. Social Welfare Before leaving for the IX WCU Congress in Kyiv in August 2008, we learned of the devastating flooding in Western Ukraine. A UNWLA announcement and plea was immediately sent to and published in Svoboda, and our newly elected Social Welfare chair, Iryna Rudyk, quickly sent email notifications to our Regional Council Presidents, soliciting help. (Please see Iryna Rudy’s report.) Immediate action was requested and a plan was developed. The Ukrainian community was very generous as more than $70,000 was donated to this cause. After the WCU of August 2008, the president of Soyuz Ukrainok Ukrainy and deputy of the Ukrainian Parliament, Lilia Hryhorovych, Honorary UNWLA President Iryna Kurowyckyj; and I flew to Ivano-Frankivsk oblast to distribute a portion of these funds. A town meeting was called by local officials in both of the affected villages, and we distributed the allocated funds to the dispirited and helpless villagers of Prutivka and Stolo. On the occasion of UNWLA’s 85th anniversary and with a nostalgic look at our history and in honor of this significant anniversary in our hearts, we initiated and promoted a new and ambitious social welfare project “Assistance and Caring for the Elderly.” This new program was thoroughly discussed at our National Board meeting in October 2009, and the execution of the first phase of this much-needed program was kicked off in early December, 2009. First Vice President Ulana Zinych, Social Welfare Chair Iryna Rudyk, and I traveled to Chicago to coordinate a shipment of donated goods to the carefully chosen nursing homes located in western, central, and northern Ukraine. I contacted Mission Outreach, a Chicago-based not-for-profit, filled out the appropriate applications, and we were approved for a major donation from this organization—299 boxes of surplus items. With the help of volunteers from the Chicago Regional Council coordinated by Luba Kalin, the Regional Council’s president, this mountain of goods was repackaged and packed; boxes were grouped and addressed. We thank these dedicated ladies who worked with us in the vast and chilly warehouse. The next phase of the program was carried out independently by each Regional Council and with the support of Iryna Rudyk. Town Hall Village of Prutivka (Ivano Frankivsk Oblast).
