Membership The backbone of every organization is its membership, and membership has been the focus of every UNWLA president and her Board, including mine. At the National Board meeting held in October 2009, I stressed the importance of communication within our organization and, to this end, the projects described below were initiated and will continue. The extremely important and intensive UNWLA Retention and Recruitment Campaign was initiated and conducted by Anna Macielinski, UNWLA Second VP of Membership. (Please see her report for details.) Lana Yarymovych’s work as Liaison to Members at Large (a position that was created at the XXVIII Convention in Detroit), is vital. There are now 200 (and counting) Members at Large in our organization, and because of the nature of membership at large, we feel it is essential to provide nurturing and encouragement to ensure that these members do not feel excluded or set adrift. Ms. Yarymovych has been developing a system of periodic communication with this important category of membership and has dedicated her attentions and efforts tirelessly towards this end. (Please see her report for details.) With improved communications as the goal, during its February 2010 meeting, the Executive Board adopted a more proactive approach. First, every member of the Executive Committee was paired with a Regional Council or with the Liaisons for Branches at Large or Members at Large. I asked these members to contact their assigned counterparts on a quarterly basis, and focus on plans, successes, and/or challenges, questions to the Executive Committee. The philosophy and reason behind this new approach is the belief that open, more frequent discussions will emphasize that we are members of ONE national organization. This newly initiated system requires cooperation from all the players and should continue into the next term. I thank the Regional Council Presidents in advance for their cooperation and maintenance of this important open line of communication. To this end, one of my goals is to visit branches throughout the country - either myself or an Executive Board representative. OUR LIFE Following the path of other periodicals and prompted by financial necessity, the UNWLA Executive Board voted in 2008 to merge the Our Life editorial positions into one, appointing English- language editor Tamara Stadnychenko as editor in chief of the magazine. In 2010, our Ukrainian- language editor, Lida Slysh, joined the magazine’s staff. Change is sometimes difficult to navigate and accept, but, of course, is best when embraced with optimism and a positive approach. One of our priorities has been to maintain a balance between Ukrainian and English language articles, while maintaining flexibility. Our goal has been, of course, to maintain the integrity and quality of Our Life while, at the same time, making our magazine more current, more relevant to the lives of our membership. Based on the membership’s input as well as the constant flow of submitted articles arriving at the editor’s desk, it appears that our editors have succeeded. I would like to congratulate them and also thank our Ukrainian-language proofreader, Sviatoslav Lewyckyi; Iryna Koshulap, Ukrainian/English translator; and Marie Duplak of Computoprint for their cooperation and patience. It has been a pleasure working with them and transforming our magazine into a better reflection of “our life.” In my monthly “Sharing Thoughts, News & Views,” I present current UNWLA events but also try to engage readers by sharing who I am, my own style, and what I feel makes our organization tick. This monthly assignment can be quite a challenge! One innovative idea introduced during the past three years was to feature Ukrainian American female artists’ work on the cover of the magazine. This project has been very successfully managed by Member at Large, Irena Steckiv. With these decisions and changes, we have been able to stabilize the magazine’s financial status. Besides implementing the necessary personnel changes, I have trimmed the number of issues printed in order to avoid printing of extra copies and additional storage costs. As of January 2010, all administrative functions have been moved to UNWLA’s office administrator, Olya Stasiuk, who keeps the mailing data base current and also keeps the subscription list current, sending timely reminders to Members at Large.
