President Bohdan Kurchak and Chairman Lubomyr Zielyk of Self Reliance (NY) Federal Credit Union present a generous gift to Marianna Zajac, President of UN WLA showing their support of our organization, the UNWLA. president of the Board of Trustees, Lubomyr Zielyk. The UNWLA is most grateful for the Credit Union’s under standing of and support for the extensive community work our organization undertakes. Greetings were also offered in person by representatives of the Ukrainian government as well as by representatives of community organizations. The presentation of A Candle in Remembrance, an English translation of Professor Valentyna Borysenko’s book Svicha Pamiati, was an important highlight of the weekend agenda. Funding for this project was generously provided by UNWLA member Martha Pelensky, Philadelphia Regional Council, who sponsored the project in memory of her beloved mother. This project was chaired by First Vice President Ulana Zinych, who is to be congratulated for coordinating the work of those involved in various aspects of the project. At the invitation of the UNWLA, Professor Borysenko flew in from Ukraine for the formal presentation of this long-awaited translation. We firmly believe this book should be in every Ukrainian American home as a reminder of a dark and tragic period in Ukrainian history that should never be forgotten. The main goal of this translation was to share this tragedy with the non-Ukrainian community and with institutions of higher learning. To this end, the book has been mailed out, with a cover letter of introduction written by UNWLA’s fourth Vice President Christine Melnyk, to approximately 50 university libraries as well as other educational institutions in the United States, Canada, England and Ukraine. In addition, individual UNWLA branches have been personally donating the book to their local libraries. In the conclusion of my presentation on the history of the UNWLA at this 85th anniversary celebration, I stressed that “our organization unites both generations and immigrations; it is an organization where women of Ukrainian descent find a common language, a love for Ukraine and respect for each other.” I also noted, however, that “we find renewed energy, align ourselves to changes of the limes and move forward Visiting Regional Councils and Branches Visiting UNWLA membership was most rewarding and gratifying as it gave me a personal, quick, and true appreciation for each Regional Council, each branch, each member. Each Regional Council and each branch works in its own unique way, with programs and activities based on its own circumstances and environment. Below is a chronological review of the Regional Councils and branches I was able to visit. June 2008. Northern New York. Co-presidents were elected in Northern New York—Didi Butenko of Syracuse and Zinnia Dzus DeBole of Buffalo. Many miles separate the branches of Northern New York and the coordination of their work has become a challenge. June 22, 2008. The 45th anniversary of the Chicago Regional Council. A celebratory Anniversary Luncheon was attended by the community to pay tribute to this very active Regional Council. November 2, 2008. I was honored to join members of Branch 54 in Wilmington, Delaware, for their 50th celebration. XXIX Конвенція СУА 67 www.unwla.org
