meeting, events of each month were shared, each member of the Executive Board gave her report; decisions on ongoing projects were voted on, and progress reports on these projects were presented. National Board Meetings October 24 - 26, 2008 The first annual meeting of the then newly elected National Board took place at UNWLA headquarters. The atmosphere was upbeat and confident. Important plans were laid for the upcoming year. Highlights Zoriana Haftkowycz, Arts & Museum Chairperson and our new Webmaster, presented her plans for our website upgrade. It was decided that Brama would continue to hose the website, and I must add that Hanya Krill Pizur was most helpful in the transition that followed. Another very important decision was presented by Anna Macielinski—the development of a comprehensive membership campaign, entitled “UNWLA Retention and Recruitment Campaign” which was to be rolled out in March 2009, during National Women in History month. UNWLA Vice President for Cultural Affairs, Sofia Hewryk, presented the Kovaliv Award to Vasyl Makhno for his collection of poetry Cornelia Street Cafe. In 2009, the Central New York Regional Council hosted the UNWLA National Board on its territory in upstate New York. The Regional Council turned to and received financial support from the NY Federal Credit Union branch. This annual Board meeting was held Oct 23-25 at the Ukrainian National Association resort (Soyuzivka) in Kerhonkson, New York. The progress of the plans and goals which had been set forth the previous year was reviewed. Highlights. Our Life was on better financial footing, feedback from readers was positive. The Vice President for Organizational matters, Anna Macielinski; the Acting Liaison for Branches at Large, Orysia Zinycz; and the Member at Large Chairperson, Lana Yarymovych, had focused on communication with membership and results were positive. Art & Museum Chairperson, and our Webmaster, Zoriana Haftkowycz, had transformed the website. Details of the new Social Welfare Program, “Assistance and Caring for the Elderly” were formally introduced to the National Board by Social Welfare Chairperson, Iryna Rudyk. In 2010, the annual UNWLA National Board meeting was held in New York City during the weekend of October 8-10. Because of fire damage suffered at the UNWLA headquarters office six weeks before the scheduled meeting, the meeting was held in the New York Federal Credit Union Self Reliance Association conference room, which was generously offered by Natalia Duma, president of the Association, and Oksana Lopatynsky, the Association’s administrator. We sincerely thank them for their understanding and cooperation. Highlight. This year’s meeting was especially significant and successful because it coincided with the UNWLA’s 85th anniversary, and because, for the first time in several years, every Regional Council was represented! Remembering 85 years of community work The Executive Committee decided that the 2010 gathering of the National Board members would be an opportune time to commemorate together the UNWLA’s 85th anniversary. What more appropriate place than the Ukrainian Museum, which was founded by UNWLA and was about to celebrate an anniversary—its 5th in the new location. Due to limited space at the Museum, each UNWLA branch was invited to send one delegate; local community organizations that had supported UNWLA and its efforts throughout the years were also invited. On the evening of October 9, we gathered in a festive mood to remember our past history and thank our predecessors for their persistence and wisdom. As current UNWLA president, I reviewed the highlights and accomplishments of our organization by summarizing these within the framework of each presidency. The mistress of ceremonies was Maria Andriyovych, and entertainment was provided by two young and enthusiastic members of Branch 125. The generosity of the Self Reliance NY Federal Credit Union was again proven by its gift of $50,000, which was presented by the Credit Union’s President and CEO, Bohdan Kurchak, and the 66 XXIX Конвенція СУА www.unwla.org
