MARIANNA ZAJAC PRESIDENT OF THE UKRAINIAN NATIONAL WOMEN’S LEAGUE OF AMERICA Being the president of a respected organization known worldwide for its positive and lasting impact on the diaspora in which it is based has been both an honor and a challenge. It has been an honor to follow a long line of women who understood the importance as well as the potential of Ukrainian women united with the same goals. However, in this day and age, it is also a challenge to ensure the continuity of all diaspora organizations, including our own. This immediately raises a question: In what direction should I direct the newly elected Executive Committee? I had already given much thought to this issue and decided that we should start by taking a snapshot of where UNWLA stood and, after evaluating this position, take steps to solidify its membership and financial stability. Therefore, the goal has always been to direct our work with the mission of setting measurable objectives and taking concrete steps to ensure our organization’s viability with goals we can all work toward. Our obligation is to understand equally that the life of our organization, like the life of each individual, is ruled by the progression of time and change. As you will read below, the past three years have allowed the National Board to make headway in the desired direction by keeping this concept in mind; it is this that has allowed us to make changes in order to ensure a better financial basis, a better technological foundation, better communication, and to move into the future. Change is not always easy to accept or to implement, however necessary it may be. The differences you will read about and should already be familiar with have affected Our Life’s look, content, interest, and financial stability; our administrative office’s efficient functionality; our website’s effectiveness in representing and presenting who we are and what we do; our new plan for communications with our Regional Councils and, by extension, our branches (a plan that permits an immediate response to branches requesting information and/or advice via email or telephone, etc.) All the while, our ongoing projects, such as the Social Welfare, Scholarship, Cultural, Educational, and Archival programs continue to fulfill our core mission. A related goal, however, is to remain sensitive to any new needs and opportunities that may call for changes in existing programs or adding new programs. Based on these criteria, we feel confident we have succeeded. I quickly learned that, besides “measurable objectives” and “concrete steps,” leadership must recognize the importance of the “human factor” as something that is just as or even more important in a volunteer organization. Finding a way to work toward a common goal with respect for one another is paramount. My job was to set goals with the approval of the National Board and then to coordinate the work required to achieve those goals. In accomplishing that job, I worked with the organization’s vice presidents and chairwomen of the organization’s standing committees. To grasp the wide scope of their, of our, accomplishments over the past three years and for a detailed picture of what has been accomplished during the past three years, I encourage you to read the reports of each of our vice presidents and of each chairwoman of the National Board published in this convention book. I thank each member of the National Board for her contribution to our successes. The UNWLA, as any national organization, can only be as successful as its individual players. It is due to the dedication and contributions of the National Board that we are able to function efficiently and address all its projects.
