UNW LA PRESIDENT’S WELCOME As I complete my third year as president of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America, I am in awe of and filled with gratitude to our membership and its local leadership around the country. It was while visiting Regional Councils and Branches and reading annual reports that I was able to fully grasp the immeasurable amount of work that is being accomplished and how many individual lives are being touched by the good works of the UNWLA. It is this dedication that has brought us into the 86th year of our organization’s vibrant life. When it was originally founded, the UNWLA established goals. Throughout the decades, our membership and those elected to lead the organization have never wavered from those goals, building upon the original foundation, and adjusting the organiza tion’s focus and endeavors to meet the demands of changing times. During the past three years, I have done my utmost to work in the same manner and with the same dedication, as have all the women with whom I have been privileged to serve. I would like to thank our membership for allowing me the honor and the privilege to lead our organization. I have attempted to work within the framework of the UNWLA by-laws and resolutions, which were adopted at the XXVIII Convention in Detroit and which are part of our organization’s traditional quest to make our programs and projects meaningful, relevant, and productive. As president, I have had the honor to represent the UNWLA at Regional Council meetings, community events, conventions, and conferences here in the United States, in Canada, and in Ukraine. Our National Board has diligently worked to move forward by making some internal changes while, at the same time, continuing on the path o f our predecessors. We thank you for your continued support! Our membership is gathering for its XXIX Convention, the 29th time that we gather in camaraderie, to review accomplishments of the past three years and to discuss plans for our future both on national and local levels. In 2010, the UNWLA celebrated its 85th anniversary. It was gratifying to discover that other organizations and institutions in the Ukrainian American community support our endeavors. In the June 29, 2008, issue of The Ukrainian Weekly, an editorial entitled “The UNWLA looks ahead” noted that “UNWLA’s leadership seeks to attract new generations and groups of women who want to be a part of something greater than themselves and who want to make their town, their country, their people and their world a better place.” This is our legacy. This is our goal. Marianna Zajac, President XXIXКонвенція СУА 35 www.unwla.org
