UNWLA BRANCH 118, HOUSTON, TEXAS BRANCH-AT-LARGE Highlights for 2008 The Branch Executive Board included the following: Martha Noukas, president; Christine Puzyk, vice president; Alla Draxler, secretary; and Halya Seniw, treasurer. Elena Kryzhanovskaya represented Branch 118 at the UNWLA 28th Convention in Detroit, and we said good-bye to our dear friend and UNWLA supporter, Paulina Seniw, who returned to Ukraine. Two pysanky demonstrations, by Elizabeth Zygarlicki, were held at the Spring Branch-Memorial Public Library. We participated in the Sts. Cyril & Methodius Slavic Heritage Festival, co-sponsored the 75th anniversary commemoration of the Famine-Genocide (Holodomor) at City Hall, and provided items for display to the Houston Public Library in downtown Houston. We also published a cookbook entitled “ Favorite Recipes of Ukrainians in Houston” and Sponsored the 28th annual Ukrainian Easter Bazaar and the annual Autumn Masquerade. Branch 118 supported the Our Life Press Fund and submitted three articles to Our Life magazine. We also contributed to the support of the Ukrainian Museum, the M ilk & Rolls Program, and the Babusia Fund. We supported five students in the UNW LA Scholarship program and provided stipends to Ridna Shkola graduates. We also provided money for diabetic and epileptic medicines and monetary support for the care of Roman Halamendyuk. Highlights for 2009 Branch 118’s Executive Board comprised Martha Noukas, president; Christine Puzyk, vice president; Alla Draxler, secretary; and Halya Seniw, treasurer. During the year, we sent a wedding gift to branch member Nadia Dub and provided monetary aid to branch member Helena Klimko who suddenly became ill and lost her vision. During 2009, we said good-bye to Alla Draxler and her family, who moved to Kansas, and to Elena Kryzhanovskaya who moved back to Virginia. During this year, Branch 118 sponsored the annual Ukrainian Easter Bazaar and the “ Take a Walk with the Stars” Autumn Masquerade. We participated in the Sts. Cyril & Methodius Slavic Heritage Festival, the Brazos Valley World Fest, and the Ukrainian Winter Crafts & Bake Sale. We held a branch Christmas party at the home of Ulyana Pintchouk. A guest speaker at one branch meeting, Larissa Dijak, shared her experiences from her recent trip to Ukraine. We supported the Ukrainian Museum, the M ilk & Rolls Program, and the Babusia Fund. We provided medicinal aid to an epileptic patient in Ukraine. We also supported Our Life Press Fund, sending a donation in memory of Tadeusz Kotarba. Lydia Bodnar-Balahutrak and Martha Noukas submitted “what I learned from my mother” essays for publication in Our Life magazine; the magazine also published an obituary about our beloved member, Irene Bohachevsky. Highlights for 2010 The Executive Board of Branch 118 included Martha Noukas, president; Christine Puzyk, vice president; Pamela Uschak, secretary; and Halya Seniw, treasurer. Membership representative Hannah Uschak began recruiting new members, collecting dues, and printing a membership booklet. By the end of the year, we had 37 members! During 2010, we honored our dear friend, Vanessa Horodecky, with a gift of $200 for her tireless artistic work in stage design for the community; we also sent a gift to our young member, Elena Kryzhanovskaya, on the birth of her new baby girl. Branch 118 made monetary contributions to the Our Life Press Fund; we also sent money to assist a family in Ukraine, supported the “ Outreach to the Elderly” program, and sent desperately needed medicine to a man in Western Ukraine. Three Ridna Shkola graduates each received a stipend from Branch 118, and we supported the UNWLA Scholarship Program. We also supported the Zhuravli Ukrainian Dancers of Houston and purchased three new tents to attract vendors to our expanding Easter XXIX Конвенція СУА 255 www.unwla.org
