Chair of the Social Welfare Committee was Maria Polanskyj. As part of our social welfare efforts, the Branch sent a package of clothing and school supplies to the Colegio Santa Olga in Brazil; members visited Ukrainian elderly in nursing homes; and sent Christmas cards and packages to three Ukrainian-American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Branch was proud to celebrate its 21st anniversary by having a festive luncheon on June 7, 2009 at the Sisterhood Hall, St. Andrew’s Memorial Church, South Bound Brook, NJ. The program included a brief history, entertainment, a raffle, Chinese auction, and savory lunch. Details of the event were published in articles in America on June 27th, in The Ukrainian Weekly on July 26th as well as in the September 2009 issue of Our Life. The balance of the year involved more fundraising: a garage sale, gift- wrapping at a local Barnes & Noble bookstore, and our annual Christmas party. The highlight of our branch’s activities in 2010 was cosponsoring along with the Monmouth County Library Headquarters in Manalapan, NJ an evening with author and filmmaker, Irene Zabytko. We invited Ms. Zabytko to present an update of her latest project, the film documentary, Life in the Dead Zone. The film focuses on the lives of a few elderly women who, despite official prohibition, choose to return to their homes in the village of Opachichi in the highly irradiated and contaminated exclusion (dead) zone near Chornobyl, site of the world’s worst nuclear accident (1986). It was through a generous grant of $25,000 from the UNWLA Mary V. Beck Chornobly fund that she and co-director Peter Mychalcewycz were able to hire a professional crew and purchase some hi-tech equipment. They plan to make a final visit to Ukraine in the Spring of 2011 to complete work on the project. 2011 will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the disaster. An article with details of the event was published in the November 14th issue of The Ukrainian Weekly and in the December issue of Our Life. A number of our meetings during the year focused on planning for the upcoming UNWLA Convention in 2011 that will be held in our home State of NJ over the Memorial Day Weekend. Our branch will be responsible for the Exhibits Committee. In September the Branch sent a letter to the Chair of the Bylaws Committee, Oksana Xenos recommending a name change for UNWLA. It was the consensus that the English version name is not the best translation of Soyuz Ukrainok Ameryky. Our recommendation was to change the name of the organization to the Union of Ukrainian Women in America (UUWA). The Branch received confirmation of the receipt of the letter. Also during the year, we acknowledged the creation of a new UNWLA Branch (131) in New Jersey and welcomed them with a $100 gift. Other activities included sending another package to Brazil, contributing to a package for an orphanage in Ukraine, sending Easter and Christmas cards to the elderly and military, fundraising by gift-wrapping at a local Barnes & Noble bookstore, and hosting our traditional year-end Christmas party. We are grateful to our membership and friends who continue to collaborate in support of the goals of the UNWLA. MEMBERS OF UNWLA BRANCH 98 EXTEND BEST WISHES FOR A SUCCESSFUL XXIX UNWLA CONVENTION FRUITFUL DELIBERATIONS and ELECTION OF OFFICERS. MAY GOD BLESS!
