UNWLA BRANCH 95, KATHERINE ZARYCKY SOROKA PATRONESS KERHONKSON - POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. CENTRAL NEW YORK REGION Front row: Stephanie Hawryluk, Maria Cade, Eva Panchyshyn, Lesia Kuch. Back row: Marianna Crans, Catherine Gorham, Olha Drozdowyez, Zinia Stecyk. Members not in photograph: Lillie DeLauro, Ksenia Deresz, Maxine Hayden, Thecla Kurylo, Tania Kuzmyn, Irene Lesiw, Harriet Losieaux, Natalie Masnyj, Elaine Oprysko, Maria Ougrin, Oksana Protenic, Bohdanna Puzyk, Natalie Ruggiero, Ulana Salawycz, Irena Slywkanycz, Vera Staruch, Halina Szczawinsky, Marianna Zajac, Renata Zajac. UNWLA Branch 95 comprises a group of 28 women (as of January 15, 2011), all of whom possess unique and varied talents. These women hail from the N.Y. Hudson Valley Region and stay active in both the Ukrainian and American communities. The local Ukrainian community is centered around the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church and UNA’s Soyuzivka Ukrainian Heritage Foundation in Kerhonkson, N.Y. Every member feels deep loyalty to each other member as well as to the UNWLA. It is because of this loyalty that the branch is able to accomplish its many goals. First, we are proud that UNWLA President Marianna Zajac is one of our own—she was a founding member of the branch as well as its first president. When her busy schedule permits, she still attends branch meetings. She has given us a tremendous example of service to the UNWLA. Another Branch 95 member, Maria Cade, was recently elected as President of the Central New York Regional Council. Branch 95 attended the a Regional Council meeting held in Cohoes, N.Y., in early 2010 for elections; later (in May 2010) we hosted a Regional Council planning meeting to discuss strategies for providing support to our assigned “ pensionat ” home in Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine. Ultimately, Branch 95 spent approximately $1,000 on our June 2010 shipment of supplies to our assigned nursing home in Ukraine. Included in the supplies we shipped were homemade blankets, various personal care items, and medical supplies. A Regional Council representative visited the nursing home, and our branch communicates with the home via telephone and email. We have chosen to make donations to the nursing home on an annual basis, as long as resources permit. Branch 95 traditionally participates in the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church’s Christmas and Easter Bazaars. Our members put their talents to good use, creating handmade items for sale. In 2010, we made and handed out Mother’s Day corsages, pinning each woman with flowers as she entered church on Sunday. In 2008, we helped raise funds in the local church community for a flood-ravaged Ukraine. In November 2008, we commemorated the 75th anniversary of the Ukrainian Famine-Genocide with a panakhyda (requiem service) following Sunday mass and hosted a joint program with Branch 89.
