UNWLA BRANCH 38, DENVER, COLORADO BRANCH-AT-LARGE Marking the 75th anniversary of the Holodomor by involving Colorado’s academic community as well as Denver’s Ukrainian com munity was the primary goal of Branch 38 during the past three years. To this end, branch members focused their energies on raising funds through numerous bake sales to underwrite a three-day Holodomor event. Sufficient funds were raised to enable us to invite three internationally recognized experts to lead a conference on famines, which was held on October 9-11, 2008, at the University of Denver. More than 200 local teachers, students, and community members participated in the event. The conference began on Friday evening with the screening of the documentary “Harvest of Despair” at the Joseff Korbel School of International Studies. A discussion of the his torical context of the Holodomor followed the screening. Saturday was devoted to lectures on the Holodomor and the genocide of the Ukrainian people, as well as a discussion of how governments use food deprivation as a tool of coercion. The discussion on the Holodomor continued on Sunday after Holy Mass at the Ukrainian Church of the Transfiguration in Denver. Branch 38 also mounted a month-long exhibit of historic materials from the 1930s and books on the Holodomor. The exhibit was held in the main library of the Arapahoe Library District in suburban Denver and received positive coverage in local newspapers. Branch 38 members are continuing their mission to spread the word about Ukraine and its history and culture by undertaking a book project, which is envisioned as a collection of family and personal memories spanning the World War II years and the immigration that followed.
