UNWLA BRANCH 30, YONKERS, N.Y., PATRON LYDIA KRUSHELNYTSKA NEW YORK REGIONAL COUNCIL Our branch was founded in 1987 with the twin goals of promoting a better understanding of Ukrainian culture and heritage among non-Ukrainians, while maintaining our own traditions in the Ukrainian community. This year, we decided to name our branch in honor of Lydia Krushelnytska. We appreciate how she worked to uphold Ukrainian culture in the diaspora, and we expect to have a formal naming dedication in the near future. Most of our members are scattered over a large area of Northern Westchester. Because of distance constraints, some members are not as active as others, but all are considered valuable and all contribute to the success of our branch in some way. No one said it should all be work, so we try to alternate the venue of monthly meetings—working sessions at the Yonkers SUM A building and more lighthearted social dinners at members’ houses and local restaurants. On occasion, members educate and entertain us with presentations about aspects of Ukrainian history and culture that they have investigated. A great loss for our branch, as well as for the Ukrainian community at large, was the untimely passing in 2010 of Roxolana Podpirka, a very active and vibrant member of Branch 30. In her name, we have contributed $500 to the Ukrainian Museum in New York. We regard the Ukrainian Museum in New York as one of the jewels of the Ukrainian diaspora, and all our members support it through individual museum memberships as well as by monetary gifts for the benefit of the Ukrainian Museum from various branch fundraising activities, including Christmas caroling at Ukrainian-owned businesses as well as private Ukrainian homes. One continuing aspect of supporting our primary goals is supporting education, and this includes upkeep of the svitlychka in Yonkers. Founded by our members, the svitlychka actually predates the establishment of our branch. Currently, 20 children are enrolled. In addition, we have always actively supported the U N W L A ’s student sponsorship program and are currently contributing to support two young U krainian w om en in their university studies.
