Членки СУА беруть активну участь в щорічному Пітсбурзькому Міжнародному Фестивалі, приготовляючи виставку українського народного мистецтва, беруть участь в акції викладання української мови при Пітсбурзькому університеті. BRANCH 27, PITTSBURGH, PA BRANCH-AT-LARGE Branch 27 was organized in 1920 under the name “Women’s Association” at the St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church on the South Side of Pittsburgh. Its founders were Mrs. Sydorak, Mrs. Handoha, and Mrs. Maria Malewich, who was the president during the early years. The group, with a small but active membership, became associated with the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America in 1927. The women of Branch 27 participated in ethnic festivals and community events. During World War II, membership activity declined. The branch was reactivated thanks to the efforts of Mrs. Shustakevych and later Marusia Beck. Revitalized, the branch resumed participating in community events and giving aid to Ukraine. Its members took part in ceremonies at the office of the mayor of Pittsburgh marking various events in Ukraine’s history. In July of 2002, Branch 27 celebrated its 75th anniversary, featuring its originator Dr. Marusia Beck. Currently, members of Branch 27 are featured on Pittsburgh’s Ukrainian Radio Program hosted by Michael Komichak, reading biographies of Ukrainian women and honoring Ukrainian heroines. Branch 27 decorates the Ukrainian Nationality Room at the University of Pittsburgh during the Christmas season. Branch members also participate yearly at the Pittsburgh International Folk Festival with a Ukrainian cultural display. Members of Branch 27 also teach and sponsor pysanky workshops. The branch organized its first “Vyshyvani Vechornytsi” in 1950, a tradition that has continued to this day. Since 2004, Branch 27 has sponsored the presentation of debutantes at this annual event. Marika Zaliszczuk, president of Pittsburgh Branch 27, is chair of the Pittsburgh Ukrainian Famine Committee. Other UNWLA members serving on this committee are Anne Konecky, Jaroslawa Komichak, and Luba Hlutkowsky. The first commemorative event organized by the committee was held on November 11, 2007, at Heinz Chapel at the University of Pittsburgh. 192 XXIXКонвенція СУА www.unwla.org
