Atlanta is a drop off point for young children and adults (including Ukrainian women and children) brought to this country for the purpose of human trafficking, and one of our more important initiatives during 2010 was to join the Georgia Rescue & Restore Coalition. As the coalition’s mission statement explains, “Georgia Rescue & Restore is a diverse group of members working together to abolish modern-day slavery. Our focus includes all forms of forced labor, sex trafficking, and commercial sexual exploitation of both children and adults both domestic and international. We accomplish this by raising public and community awareness and providing resources and training.” In October 2010, our branch sponsored a trip to the Monastery of the Holy Spirit located in Conyers, Georgia. The monks organized a private tour of their famous bonsai collection and their chapel for us. We were also privileged to hear them chant and to attend a special luncheon they hosted for us. Many of our churches had ceremonies and fundraisers related to the anniversary of the Chornobyl tragedy, and each member of the branch made a donation or participated in commemorative events. Each December we volunteer as guest lecturers at a Christmas House to benefit the Alliance Children's Theatre in Atlanta. Every spring, we volunteer at the Atlanta Symphony Decorators Show House. One of our main goals is to exhibit our Ukrainian culture at public venues. This spring, we are participating in the annual Flower Show in Atlanta. At the close of each year, our branch hosts a family holiday party. Photos from the Fernbank Museum of Natural History. Atlanta, Georgia. BEST WISHES THE UNWLA FOR A MOST SUCCESSFUL CONVENTION and CONGRATULATIONS TO THE NEWLY ELECTED OFFICIERS. THANK YOU FOR CONTINUING TO DO AN OUTSTANDING JOB FOR OUR ORGANIZATION!
