No. 118, Houston, TX, Martha Noukas, President, 30 Members • Inform about Ukrainian culture at the Annual Slavic Heritage Festival and hold pysanky classes at the public library. • Aid to Grandmothers and Orphans in Ukraine; support Ukrainian Museum and “OUR LIFE” Press Fund. • Members are active in various cultural activities - teach non-Ukrainians about Ukrainian culture at St Cyril Heritage Festival, Brazos Valley Worldfest and other venues. No. 124, St. Petersburg, FL, Olya Czerkas, President, 18 Members • Branch was inactive for a couple of years. With encouragement from me, Ms. Macielinski, VP, Membership & Organizational Affairs, and Branch Member Olya Cherkas, during a meeting on April of 2010, the attendees decided to begin again with a new Board and become an active Branch again. • The Branch is active again and celebrated their 10th Anniversary on October 17, 2010. Comments: Working with the various Branches, I found some common threads among the Members: • A sense of belonging. • A sense of purpose, i.e. raising funds for various social causes and scholarships helps bond the Members and create a common glue. • Some Members, although unable to attend meetings or events, support UNWLA by paying dues and contributing to UNWLA projects. • Branch #56, age span between 43 and 96, accomplishes several unique goals: offers a meeting place for newcomers to Southwest Florida, a social gathering opportunity for Ukrainian women, and an organized outlet for various activities for volunteering and helping others. Members value a sense of accomplishment and are very generous in supporting social causes. Suggestions • Speedy communications, i.e., Minutes of Meetings e-mailed to absent members to ensure they are kept up to date and remain part of the organization. • Make a point of thanking members for all contributions and accomplishments, regardless of size or scope, to encourage future cooperation. • Introduce new and prospective members, ask about their interests, and encourage even small participation in projects. • Create a specific goal which would attract and encourage younger women to join. From Martha Noukas. President of Branch No. 118 - an Annual Branch report with photos summarizing the year’s events would be the best archival material for UNWLA.
