NEW YORK CENTRAL REGIONAL COUNCIL Having been elected president of New York Central Regional Council after the last UNWLA Convention, I have come to appreciate the work of our organization and all the wonderful and gracious ladies whom I have had the pleasure to meet over the course of the past three years. Until recently, Central New York Regional Council consisted of three branches. Branch 34, Branch 95, and Branch 99. As of January 1, 2011, however, Branch 62 of Glen Spey, New York (President Nadia Rajcz), has transferred from the New York Regional Council to our region; we welcome our new branch and look forward to working closely with branch members in the future. Branch 34 is based in Cohoes, New York. Maria Maciuk is president of the branch, which consists of 21 members. Branch meetings are held in the church hall of Sts. Peter & Paul. The branch was formed in the 1930s and members are very active. They invite parishioners and other guests for coffee and cake after Divine Liturgy on Sundays. Additionally they organize Prosfora, Mother’s Day snacks, and Father’s Day celebrations. Branch members also visit the sick and elderly, frequently explaining to elderly shut-ins how and when to take their medicines. They also tend to deceased members’ gravesites. Branch 95, the branch I belong to, is located in the Kerhonkson-Poughkeepsie area of New York. The branch president is Eva Panchyshyn, and there are 24 members, including UNWLA President Marianna Zajac. We hold our meetings at Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church hall or at one of the members’ homes. Throughout the year we hold bake sales, penny socials, and participate in the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church Easter and Christmas Bazaars. We also take part in a variety of local community outings, such as “One River Many Streams,” an event which was held in conjunction with the, Dutchess County Arts Council. This event allows branch to share Ukrainian culture and heritage with the local non-Ukrainian community, a longstanding goal. Branch 95 will celebrate its 20th anniversary this year. Branch 99 is located in Watervliet, New York. Vera Kushnir serves as branch president, and there are 42 branch members. Coincidentally, Branch 99 will be celebrating its 42nd anniversary this year. The branch sponsors a “Svitlychka” and is active in the local Ukrainian School. Branch members host the Easter and Christmas bazaars at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church. At Christmas, branch members go caroling; during Easter, they bake. The Easter Bazaar is always a great success, with local non- Ukrainians lining up around the Church early in the morning, waiting to get in. Branch 99 also takes a very active part in the annual “Festival of Nations.” They sell Ukrainian food and organize a display of Ukrainian embroidery and ceramics. Each October, the UNWLA’s national officers, committee chairs, and regional council presidents gather to brainstorm and share their experiences of the past year. In October 2009, the New York Central Regional Council was able to obtain funding from NY Self Reliance Federal Credit Union to cover the cost of the National Board Meeting, which was held at the Ukrainian National Association’s resort Soyuzivka. Currently the three branches of New York Central Regional Council are all actively working on the UNWLA’s newly launched Social Welfare project—Caring and Assistance for the Elderly. Each branch has either sent packages to its assigned nursing home or has raised funds or is in the process of doing so. Vera Staruch of Branch 95 has established and maintains contact with the director of our assigned nursing home in Ivano-Frankivsk. The Regional Council of Central New York hopes to continue its charitable and community work in an atmosphere of UNWLA “sisterhood”! Maria Cade, President New York Central Region NEW YORK CENTRAL REGIONAL COUNCIL WOULD LIKE TO WISH THE UNWLA A MOST SUCCESSFUL CONVENTION. TO THE NEWLY ELECTED OFFICIALS: MAY GOD BE WITH YOU, AS YOU CONTINUE WITH ALL THE OUTSTANDING GOOD WORKS OF OUR WONDERFUL ORGANIZATION. MNOHAYA LITA TO ALL! XXIX Конвенція СУА 167 www.unwla.org
