OLHA TRYTYAK ARCHIVES COMMITTEE CHAIR The UNWLA archives are stored in the Immigration History Research Center (IHRC) in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Established in 1965 at the University of Minnesota, the IHRC holds archival collections of 27 ethnic groups that live in the United States. The IHRC archival collections are open to students, researchers, and journalists. The Ukrainian collection was started in 1966 when the professor of the University of Minnesota, Oleksander Hranovsky, donated his personal library and archives to the IHRC. The Ukrainian collection has attracted scholars from Ukraine as well as those from the United States. The UNWLA archive was classified with the assistance from Halyna Myroniuk, Senior Assistant Curator, who worked in the IHRC until 2009. As UNWLA Archives Committee Chair, I am grateful to her for this work. The position of UNWLA Archive Committee Chair was introduced in 1999 when it was decided to catalogue and manage the organization’s archives, collected since the founding of the UNWLA in 1925. It became necessary to sort, classify, and organize our archival documents and find a proper storage facility for them. The Immigration History Research Center of the University of Minnesota was chosen for this purpose. The UNWLA National Board learned that the Center held in its collections archives of all major Ukrainian organizations and establishments in the United States, as well as the archives of Ukrainian scholars, community activists, writers, and artists. When we initiated this project, I invited Oleksandra Kirshak and Myroslava and Dr. Denys Stakhiv to join the UNWLA Archive Committee. Starting from 1999, we sorted and organized almost 300 boxes with documents that had been kept in the UNWLA office or in the houses of some of the UNWLA members who collected materials related to their work in the organization. Some documents had also been in a public storage facility in Matawan, New Jersey. As chair of the Archive Committee, I prepared guidelines for the National Board, Regional Councils, and branches on how to sort and categorize the UNWLA archives and provided the instructions on mailing documents to the Immigration History Research Center. All archival material forwarded to the Center is listed with a corresponding description in two languages: Ukrainian and English. XXIX Конвенція СУА 139 www.unwla.org
