Together with UNWLA Pre sident Marianna Zajac and Arts and Museum Committee Chairwoman Zoriana Haftkowycz, I was in the UNWLA delegation for this event. I was also present at the annual meeting of the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC). The president of Soyuz Ukrainok from Estonia, Lilia Chykalska, invited the UNWLA to begin developing our program in that country. During our stay in Peremyshl, Zoriana Haftkowycz and I were very impresses with our visit to M. Shashkewycz Ukrainian School in the city. It is a very successful school, which offers classes from kindergarten through 12 grade, all taught by dedicated staff. During a meeting with former scholarship recipient, Bohdan Huk, now a Ukrainian activist, journalist, and historian, we learned of his work and dedication to the Ukrainian community in Poland. This confirmed our conviction of the importance of the UNWLA Scholarship Program. Maria Tucka, president of Peremyshl’s branch of the Association of Ukrainians in Poland, was also a former UNWLA scholarship recipient who took graduate pedagogy courses at the Ukrainian Free University in Munich, Germany. The extraordinary success of our former scholarship recipients proves that the work and foresight of former UNWLA Scholarship Committee chairwomen, beginning with Dr. Theodozia Sawycka, Sofia Andrushkiw, and Vera Mycio, who secretly aided students in Poland; and more recently, Anna Krawczuk and Luba Bilowchtchuk, was not in vain. We are grateful to sponsors, who believed in the Ukrainian youth in Poland and supported them more than 25 years ago, during trying political and economic times of the Soviet regime that finally ended in 1990. We cannot do it alone! Together with your help and support, we can equip them with the skills and knowledge necessary in realizing their goals and dreams in their homeland.
