Ukrainian World Congress Annual Meeting At the invitation of the Ukrainian World Congress Social Welfare Committee Chairwoman, I was asked to present a financial report on the amount of humanitarian aid provided to Ukraine by UNWLA’s Social Welfare and Scholarship Programs from the Independence of Ukraine in 1991 to 2007. I reported that during this period of time, the aid through these programs totaled $3,290,490 of which $1,752,971 was contributed by the UNWLA Social Welfare Fund and $1,537,522 was contributed by the UNWLA Scholarship Program. Very interesting reports were also presented by other charitable and nonprofit Ukrainian organizations in the diaspora (from the United States, Canada, Australia, and other countries). We had very little knowledge about the humanitarian activities of similar nongovernmental organizations in Ukraine, such as La Strada, Ukrainian Red Cross, etc., and we were very eager to learn about them and their work in Ukraine. Meeting with Oblast presidents of Soyuz Ukrainok Branches in Kyiv, Ukraine. The discussion at the meeting centered on the criteria for recommending students to the UNWLA Scholarship Program, the documents required to obtain a scholarship, and the responsibilities of students. The most important responsibility and obligation of students to correspond with their individual sponsors and with us in the Ukrainian language was underscored. 2008. Lviv. Meeting at the Solomiia Krushelnycky Music Institute in Lviv with scholarship recipients and gra duates recommended by Iryna Krav chuk. Many former students of our program, presently professionals (some of whom have earned PhDs) were in attendance and came specif ically to meet with us and thank us. All of them send greetings to their sponsors. Together with Anna Krawczuk, we visited the Seminary at the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv. We were greeted by Rector Rev. Dr. Shevchuk who introduced us to Rector Emeritus, Rev. Dr. Bohdan Prach, an alumnus of the UNWLA Scholarship Program in Poland many years ago. We were very well aware of his tre mendous pastoral work in Poland and later in Ukraine. Rev. Prach’s devotion and dedication to his calling is an inspiration to us all. Lviv. At Ukrainian Catholic Seminary. Anna Krawczuk, Rector Emeritus Rev. Dr. Bohdan Prach and Maria Polanskyj. Buffalo, New York, November 2008 M. Orysia Jacus and I took part in the celebration of the 75th anniversary of UNWLA Branch 49 in Buffalo, New York. At the early stages of the Scholarship Program, Branch 49 was one of the first branches to respond to the Scholarship Program’s appeal “Ukrainians Helping Ukrainian Students.” In honor of the 75th anniversary of Branch 49, Certificates of Appreciation were awarded to the Branch and to sponsors and donors of the program.
