ZORIANA HAFTKOWYCZ ARTS AND MUSEUM CHAIRWOMAN As UNWLA’s Arts and Museum Chairperson (AMC) for the past three years, I have seen the economic downturn that has negatively affected and continues to affect art institutions and especially small museums like The Ukrainian Museum (UM)—grants are harder to get, financial support is not readily available, donations for the operations of the UM are affected, and membership drops. From 2008 through 2011, the UM was not an exception. Membership dues dropped by more than 15 percent, a decline that might be attributed to the fact that 40 percent of UM members are seniors. Our financial expectations for next few years are not optimistic. As the AMC, I believe that the UNWLA, as founder of UM and as the organization that has the majority of votes on the UM Board of Trustees (BOT), has the responsibility to ensure the solvency and success of UM. Unfortunately, the membership of the UNWLA is not in full support of the UM. This is evidenced by the fact that about 42 percent of UNWLA branches are not members of the UM. In 2009 I was elected Treasurer of the UM and, as a result, I have two sets of responsibilities. As Treasurer, I am responsible for oversight of the UM financial situation, which includes financial reporting, review/approval/monitoring of expenditures, budgeting, advising the BOT and EC on financial matters, and oversight of investments. As AMC, I participate in the meetings of the UM Executive Committee (EC) and the UM BOT, am a member of the UM Personnel Committee, and chair the UM Financial Committee and the UM Information Technology Committee. As AMC, I am also responsible for ensuring that proxies are mailed out to all branches so that they can cast their votes before the UM Annual Meeting. In connection with these duties, I notified branches to take the appropriate political action to support the arts stimulus bill in Congress. In addition, I worked with branches on increasing membership to the UM by giving a presentation about the history of the UM. I have also submitted articles to Our Life about the activities at the Ukrainian Museum. With Larysa Darmochwal (head of the Soyuz Ukrainok in Bolekhiv, Ukraine), I provided support and co-issued commemorative publications about the 2008 UNWLA XXVIII Convention and about the Holodomor Exhibit at the UM. These publications were later distributed to the Soyuz Ukrainok members in Bolekhiv. I attended functions at the United Nations, at the Ukrainian Institute, and most of the functions at the UM. I also attended the five-day meeting of World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations and Ukrainian World Congress in Peremyshl, Poland. XXIX Конвенція СУА 125 www.unwla.org
