CHRISTINE R. SHWED EDUCATION COMMITTEE CHAIR In my first three years as the Education Committee Chair (2005-2008), I worked to correct misconceptions and inaccuracies regarding the Holodomor. Vera Bej, UNWLA member-at-large, invited me to join a committee (formed by the UCCA in 2004) whose objective was to compile a manual on the Holodomor of 1932-1933 for American high schools. In November 2007, the book on Holodomor was forwarded to all the superintendents of the Pennsylvania school districts (total of 501). In January 2008, we sent the book to every UNWLA Regional Council. In 2009, in the early days of my second term as the Education Committee Chair, I realized that my second aim, namely, preparing a teachers’ manual for the UNWLA preschools (Svitlychky), was quite naive. First of all, I could see that most of our Svitlychky had their established routines and teaching materials that had been developed and adopted back in the 1970s, at a time when the UNWLA Education Committee was active and well organized and had prepared an extensive volume of materials to support the work of the Svitlychky. Thus, there was no need for a new manual. Having realized this, I changed my initial plans and decided to prepare additional materials using the latest teaching methodology. It was my good fortune that in November 2008, Our Life editor Tamara Stadnychenko invited me to join the editorial board, giving me the responsibility of developing a series of children’s pages for the magazine. The first of the children’s pages which I prepared appeared in Our Life in December 2008; others followed in subsequent issues. Over the past two and a half years, the majority of readers might have taken at least a cursory look at those pages and seen those pages as little more than a colorful addition to the magazine. But while some readers saw simply a colorful addition to Our Life, I was preparing these pages with a completely different purpose in mind. Every short story, picture, or activity was chosen/created because it could be developed and enriched with more detail by professional teachers and could be used as a springboard for a number of different activities. Those Svitlychky that have arranged their classroom space to include centers/corners for various activities and that run their preschool classes following the K3-K4 grade system of American schools, could use the stories as models allowing children to play different parts to learn interpersonal communication skills or develop coordination skills. Through the stories and exercises, children could also acquire skills and knowledge through playing and storytelling. With the help of the materials published in Our Life, our educators could teach about colors, animals, birds, nature, gardening, fruits and vegetables, the universe, the Sun, planets, body parts, numbers, and counting. Children could also learn about vowels, feelings, and our Ukrainian traditions. All these topics (with the exception of our traditions) 122 XXIXКонвенція СУА www.unwla.org
