advice, we selected ten geriatric homes in different regions of Ukraine for this new program. The geriatric homes are located in Ivano-Frankivsk, Petrykiv, Lviv, Tyvriv, Horbaniv, Kolomyia, Chernivtsi, Kozeletskyi. A nursing home for the elderly (Nadvechiria) in Ternopil oblast and a hospice in Ivano-Frankivsk are also included in the program. All UNWLA Regional Councils and the Branches-at-Large were assigned a geriatric home to take charge of and received contact information that included location and addresses of the geriatric homes, the number of patients, phone numbers of the geriatric homes, and phone numbers of local members of Soyuz Ukrainok of Ukraine who had volunteered to help manage the program in Ukraine. The first step of the program was organized by UNWLA President Marianna Zajac, who established contact with the nonprofit orga nization Mission Outreach in Chicago. This organization donated disposable and reusable personal hygiene items, wheelchairs, walkers, canes, bed linens, and various other items. The approximate value of Mission Outreach’s donation was $30,000. UNWLA members then had to repack these items and ship them to the nursing homes in Ukraine. On December 3-5, 2009, UNWLA President Marianna Zajac, First Vice President Ulana Zinych, and Iryna Rudyk along with members from the Chicago Regional Council met to carry out this task. We worked all day in a cold warehouse; however, the knowledge that our contribution was truly important and would help our brothers and sisters in Ukraine kept us warm. A total of 212 boxes were packed and labeled and shipped to the ten nursing homes. The total weight of these packages was 4,157 pounds, and the cost of shipping, covered by the Regional Councils and Branches-at-Large, was $3,421. The 212 packages were distributed among the nursing homes, allocation determined by the number of people in each of the homes. Thank you, dear UNWLA members from Chicago for your work and tremendous support. The next stage of this program was the independent work and cooperation between each UNWLA Regional Council and its assigned geriatric home. Due to the hard work and generosity of our UNWLA members, the geriatric homes received $11,623.77 in donations and 46 packages with items of daily necessity during 2010. At the same time, we appealed to our membership to remember UNWLA senior members who deserve our support and respect here in the United States. I have had great pleasure serving as the UNWLA Social Welfare Committee Chair. The know ledge that I was contributing to worthy causes that would help others has given me a sense of fulfillment, and I am sincerely grateful to UNWLA President Marianna Zajac for supporting and coordinating the efforts of the Social Welfare Committee with the members of the UNWLA Executive Board. I am also grateful to Vice President Ulana Zinych for handling the daily work of the Social Welfare Fund, to Roma Shuhan for managing the finances and guiding our work with her valuable advice, to Natalia Duma for helping to compile lists of donors during the charity campaign for the flood victims, to Lidia Slysh and Tamara Stadnychenko for their assistance in publishing the lists of donors in Our Life, to Olia Stasiuk for taking on the responsibility for depositing donations and submitting lists of sponsors to Our Life, to Iryna Koshulap for assisting in preparing the supporting materials of the program Assistance and Caring for the Elderly. I would also like to express deep gratitude to all the presidents of UNWLA Regional Councils and Branches and all UNWLA members for their generosity, understanding, and support. I am also thankful to the president of Soyuz Ukrainok of Ukraine, Lilia Hryhorovych, all the presidents of the branches of Soyuz Ukrainok of Ukraine, and to all those individuals who assisted us— both in our search for those in need and in the distribution of our financial support. Our programs could not have succeeded without their support. Life in the Petrykiv geriatric home. 120 XXIX Конвенція СУА www.unwla.org
