ROMA SHUHAN FINANCIAL SECRETARY OF UNWLA During the three-year reporting period, as the financial secretary of UNWLA, I did the following: • prepared and sent notices to branches regarding their financial obligation to the National Board and regarding subscriptions for Our Life magazine; • maintained and updated the financial records of all branches and was in frequent communication with branch presidents via telephone or e-mail; • reported the financial status and progress of branch payments at UNWLA executive meetings; • paid bills that came to the office and took care of various financial matters; • wrote two circulars regarding financial reports and deadlines to the National Board. • sent reminders to all Regional Councils, branches and branches-at-large about filing annual tax reports electronically to the IRS via the so-called “e-postcard”; • compared and made corrections, additions, and changes to the annual register report sent by the IRS regarding federal I.D. numbers of all UNWLA branches and Regional Councils; • took part in auditing of UNWLA books and finances with the UNWLA treasurer and Auditing Committee; • was assigned to prepare preliminary budgets for UNWLA headquarters and Our Life magazine for annual National Board meetings. At the end of August 2010, there was a fire in the UNWLA building, which caused a lot of damage in the stairwell on the 5th floor. While trying to contain the fire with water, the firemen flooded rooms on the 4th and 5th floors and caused damage to both floors. The fire also melted all electrical wiring, and we had no electricity in the hallway or the 5th floor. Because of the accident and the resulting smoke damage and repairs to the floor and electrical system, the UNWLA offices were closed for more than five months. During this time, normal office routines were disrupted, and the office administrator and I had to work from home, a solution that was necessary but that sometimes made it difficult for those trying to reach us by phone or fax and even the U.S. postal service. Shortly after the fire, UNWLA President Marianna Zajac appointed me to be the UNWLA liaison with UCCA during reconstruction and repairs of our offices and I agreed. Although the job was slow and sometimes frustrating, I am pleased to close this report with the happy news that the repairs went well and the newly refurbished UNWLA offices and domivka were re-opened on February 14, 2011.
