request, the page about the 1932-1933 as Holodomor-Genocide against the Ukrainian people was removed from the official Website of the President of Ukraine. The UNWLA wrote a letter asking President Yanukovych to restore the page and passed it to him via the Ukrainian Embassy in Washington D.C. May 2010 In the early part of 2010, the events unfolding in Ukraine under the presidency of Yanukovych and his government began to concern Ukrainians in the diaspora. The UNWLA was, and continues to be, worried about the status of the Ukrainian language and education policy, which we believe are at risk. The UNWLA Executive Board passed a decision to write an open letter to the President of Ukraine to express our concern about certain policies. The letter was written and sent to the government officials in Ukraine, representatives of Ukraine in the United States, mass media, and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton before her visit to Ukraine. UNWLA members were called to reach out to their local representatives as well as to their Senators and congressional representatives. This campaign evidenced one of the core aims of the UNWLA—to defend and advocate for human rights and freedoms of our brothers and sisters in Ukraine. That same month, I assisted in preparing and attended the official opening of the exhibition in the Ukrainian Museum in New York— “Ukraine-Sweden: At the Crossroads of History (XVII-XVIII Centuries).” October 2010 I attended the annual meeting of the UNWLA National Board in New York, N.Y., and the festivities celebrating the 85th anniversary of the UNWLA, which took place in the Ukrainian Museum on October 9. February 2011 Together with UNWLA President Marianna Zajac, I attended a meeting with Ambassador Yuriy Sergeyev, Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN, and his assistant Olha Kavun. WFUWO President Maria Szkambara and three representatives from Canada took part in the annual conference of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), which was being held in New York. WFUWO sponsored one of the events at the CSW Conference— a workshop entitled “Women and Girls in Science and Technology: Obstacles Overcome, Goals Achieved.” The workshop took place on February 23, 2011, and was moderated by Marta Kebalo. Besides my service on the Executive Board, I have been a member of Branch 108 in New Haven, Connecticut, since 1970. In 2007, our branch established an ad hoc committee to mark the 75th anniversary of the Holodomor. This committee continues its work of spreading information about that tragic page of Ukraine’s history. In addition to the commemorative events that were held on the state level in May 2008, we also sponsored an exhibit in the State Capitol in Hartford in February 2010, to which we invited Senators and Representatives of Congress, further contributing to the dissemination of information about the Holodomor. To conclude, I would like to express my gratitude to all the UNWLA members for the trust they vested in me at the XXVIII Convention when they elected me as UNWLA Vice President for Public Relations. My best wishes to the incoming Executive Board for great success in working on behalf of Ukrainian women in Ukraine and in the United States and for the good of Ukraine in general. Former UN Secretary General once said, “When women thrive, all of society benefits, and succeeding generations are given a better start in life.” Thank you for your part in this important work.
