CHRYSTYNA MELNYK VICE PRESIDENT - PUBLIC RELATIONS The UNWLA Public Relations Committee works to ensure that our organization is an active participant in and contributor to both the Ukrainian-American community in particular and our broader and local communities in general. Whenever possible, UNWLA branches and individual members should join and actively engage in the work of women’s organizations in their towns and cities, participate in local political life, and arrange meetings with representatives of local and regional governments. It is also essential to establish and cultivate contacts with local English language mass media outlets. For much of its history, the work of the UNWLA was aimed at helping Ukrainians in Ukraine. Our main task was to represent Ukrainian women in international forums. When Ukraine became independent in 1991, and as Ukrainian women’s organizations began to develop a strong presence of their own in the international arena, the focus of the UNWLA shifted and the organization took on more of a supporting role in this work. Today, the UNWLA continues to assist with translation services and other such requests However, the dissemination of unbiased and transparent information about Ukraine remains a key focus of the UNWLA. The time has also come to begin paying close attention to our organization’s needs and challenges, and to share our accomplishments and achievements with our non-Ukrainian constituents in the United States. Reflecting on our 85-year history, we have many accomplishments of which to be proud. Our predecessors dedicated a tremendous amount of time and effort toward building the organization; as a result, the UNWLA became among the most important organizations in the diaspora. Our aim today is to maintain our strength as an organization and to engage a new generation of women. Below is a summary of my work as UNWLA Vice President for Public Relations from June 2008 through the winter of 2010. June 2008 Together with UNWLA Honorary President Irena Kurowyckyj, I attended a meeting of the National Council of Women where I was introduced to NCW President Mary Singletary and had a chance to learn about the work of the NCW. I also participated in the general meeting of the Ukrainian Museum in New York. July 2008 I wrote a letter to US Representative Nita Lowey regarding the discontinuation of the Ukrainian radio program Voice of America. I forwarded the letter via email to the heads of the UNWLA Regional Councils to solicit local UNWLA branch participation in the campaign and involvement in a letter writing campaign to the government asking that the broadcast be continued. The program was extended to December 2008. In January 2009 an interview with the long-term host of the program, Anya Dydyk- Petrenko, appeared in Our Life. XXIX Конвенція СУА 101 www.unwla.org
