were present: Anna Krawczuk — President, Olha Trytyak — Vice President, Slava Rubel — Press Representative, and Mary Tomorug — NCW Treasurer. The NCW elections were held at this meeting. Vera Rivers was elected President and I was elected honorary Presi dent. Mary Tomorug joined the Executive Board. After the meeting I moderated a panel. b. Programs March 8, 1994. The NCW celebrated the International Women’s Day with a luncheon program at the United Nations. The governor of New Jersey, Christine Todd Whitman spoke about Women in the public and pri vate sectors in important decision making positions. This was the same topic as those addressed and discussed at the 4th World Conference on Women in Beijing. This pro gram received wide press coverage and was reported by television news in New Jersey. Many members of the UNWLA took part in the program. I especially wish to thank the President of the UNWLA, Anna Krawczuk. While presenting her at the luncheon, I emphasized that I too was a member of the UNWLA. The President of the Regional Coun cil of New York, Nadia Sawchuk, was also present at the luncheon. November 14, 1994. The NCW held a banquet at the UN to honor eight corpora tions for creating uniquely positive work environments for women. Oksana Krovytska, soprano-soloist of the New York City Opera sang two Ukrainian songs to the accompan iment of pianist Volodymyr Vynnytsky. The Master of Ceremonies, Lynn Sherr, noted, ’’today we seem to have a very Ukrainian atmosphere — with a Kurowyckyj, a Krovytski and a Vynnytsky in the audience. I wonder why?” The crowd broke out in applause and, at that moment, I felt I had fulfilled my assignment from the UNWLA and had made my mark as a Ukrainian woman. March 31, 1995. The NCW-USA hosted a seminar and luncheon celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the UN and the 108 anniversary of the NCW-USA. The speakers at the morning session were the ambassador of Norway, H. E. Hans Jacob Blomllan, the assistant ambassador of the Dominican Republic, Julia T. Alvarez, and Sir Brian Urquhart of the Ford Foundation. The topic of the panel was “Dreams and Expectations for the UN Throughout its Fifty Years.” The originally scheduled luncheon speaker was the Secretary General of the UN, Boutros Boutros Ghali. However, unexpected obli gations required his attention. In his place, the audience was delighted by the Special Representative of the Secretary General for Public Affairs at the UN, Joseph Verner Reed. During the program, I made two pre sentations. At the morning session, as Pre sident of the NCW-USA, I spoke of the NCW’s work at the UN; in the afternoon, I reported on the work of the NCW in general. I also had the pleasure of greeting the President of the UNWLA, Anna Krawczuk, and many members of the organization at this event. I wish to take this opportunity to thank all of them for their attendance. c. Receptions, Conferences, and Celebrations November 13, 1993. I arranged for the President of the International Council of Women, Lily Boeykens of Belgium, the Execu tive Board of the NCW and two guests from Ukraine to visit the Ukrainian Museum in New York. One Ukrainian guest was Dr. Va lentina Yeshchenko, a deputy of the Supreme Council of Ukraine, member of the Presi dium, and chair of the committee on women’s issues, protection of the family, motherhood and childhood. She travelled to the United States to speak at the III UN Committee. The other guest was her interpreter, Nina Kowal ska. The President of the UNWLA could not attend and was represented by Barbara Ba- chysnky, Correspondence Secretary, and Iryna Chaban, editor of Our Life magazine. Lubov Wolynec conducted the tour of the museum. After the tour, I invited all the par ticipants to a reception at my home. June 23 to June 29, 1994. As President of the NCW-USA, I participated in the 27th Plenary Conference of the International Coun cil of Women held in Paris. A story about the conference appeared in Svoboda. Mary To morug and a member of the Ukrainian Wo men’s League of Canada also participated in the conference. The conference elected Ku- raisin um hadi to a three-year presidency. June 25 to June 29, 1995. I participated in the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the United Nations. Participants in the original founding ceremonies were either organizations with observer status or those invited by the American government as offi 70 www.unwla.org
