the UN Department of Public Information in Kyiv. I spoke as President of the NCW-USA from the UNWLA. In my speech I called upon the women of Ukraine to form a Na tional Council of Women of Ukraine and to retake their historic position in the Interna tional Council of Women. A story about my participation in the conference appeared in Svoboda on June 12, 1995. During this conference, I had the oppor tunity to meet women from various organiza tions, to listen to their thoughts and to learn their plans for the future. Many of the organ izations expressed interest in contacts with American organizations. Additionally, I had the opportunity to hear a speech by a woman from Chechnya and arranged for her speech to be translated from Russian into English. Ms. Bankston of San Jose, California, pre pared a news story, for which I wish to thank her. I sent the story to several American magazines; unfortunately, none expressed interest in publishing it. Clearly, the American press does not desire to publish anti-Russian materials. H. COOPERATION WITH AMERICAN WOMEN’S ORGANIZATIONS I. The General Federation of Women’s Clubs Since 1948, the UNWLA has been a member of the General Federation of Wo men’s Clubs. During my current term, I participated in their conference in Dallas, Texas in June 1993. The Atlanta, Georgia conference, which took place in June 1994, was attended by a UNWLA member from the Georgia branch. 2. The National Council of Women of the United States In May, 1993, I was elected President of the National Council of Women of the United States for a two year term. This was a very important event for the UNWLA and a crowning moment for me personally. The NCW-USA has been in existence for 107 years and the UNWLA has been a member since 1952. In all that time, I was the first Ukrainain American elected to the Presi dency. At the VI Convention of the UNWLA, I represented the NCW as President, although I officially took office on July 1,1993. During my term as NCW-USA President, as in previous years, I continuously empha sized that I joined the NCW as a member of the UNWLA and I selected much from the Ukrainian culture and society for our pro grams. I was very pleased that another member of the UNWLA, Mary Tomorug, was the treasurer of the NCW. During my two-year term, we had four meetings of the Board of Directors, 19 meet ings of the Executive Board, 15 programs, four of which took place at the UN, three luncheons and one banquet. In this report I highlight only those programs which had ties to the UNWLA as a member of the NCW. a. Board of Directors Meetings The first Board of Directors meeting took place on November 9, 1993. The following UNWLA members were present: Mary Tomo rug, Treasurer of the NCW, Olha Trytyak, Vice President of the UNWLA and NCW member, Barbara Bachynsky, corresonding secretary of the UNWLA, and three members of the UNWLA in Poughkipsee, N.Y. as ob servers. Ms. Bachynsky presented the semi annual report on the UNWLA’s work. A reception prepared by the UNWLA office staff, specifically, Natalia Duma and Omelania Rohoza, took place after the meet ing. The UNWLA held the reception to cele brate my election to the office of President of the NCW-USA. Traditionally, the organi zation from which the NCW President comes hosts this reception. I wish to emphasize that I covered the expense of the reception. Dur ing the reception, the assistant ambassador of the United States to the UN, Victor Mar rero, spoke about the United States policy on women’s issues. A Board of Director’s meeting took place on April 16, 1994, in Washington, D.C. Mary Tomorug represented the UNWLA and pres ented their report. The main speaker at the luncheon was Lester Brown of the World- watch Institute. The topic of his address was “How Quickly is the Environment Deterio rating?”. November 15, 1995. A day-long meeting of the Board of Directors took place. After the meeting, a memorial service and celebra tion for Merrinelle Sullivan, a past President of the NCW was held. May 15, 1995. The fourth day-long Board of Directors’ meeting took place. In addition to me, the following members of the UNWLA 69 www.unwla.org
