February 26, 1995. At a luncheon of UNWLA Branch 38 in Denver, Colorado, I spoke about the work of the UNWLA in the 70 years of its existence. The luncheon was a celebration on Branch 38’s 16th anniver sary. Branch 38 is the only organized group in the Ukrainian community in Denver and is the driving force behind many activities. They must be commended for their work. A story about the luncheon appeared in the Ukrain ian Weekly on February 11, 1995. Branch 38 donated $200 for partial coverage of the travel costs for Oksana Kutc of Ukraine to the International Conference in Copenhagen or ganized by the United Nations. I thank them for this donation. May 4, 1995. Thanks to the efforts of Maria Navarynsky, while in Los Angeles, I met with the President of Branch 111, Kalyna Snylyk and her mother. The President dis cussed the successes and problems in her work in the Branch. The greatest difficulties she faces are the large geographical separa tion of the members and their lack of interest in assuming leadership positions. Distance precluded a meeting with the general mem bership. June 15, 1995. 1 was invited by the Asso ciation of Seniors of the Ukrainian National Association, more specifically by Iryna Rus- nak, to be the main speaker at the banquet which took place during their annual con vention. In my address, I emphasized the work of the UNWLA in the areas of public relations and the importance of the Interna tional Year of the Family. Stories about my address appeared in the Ukrainian Weekly on August 6, 1995 and in Svoboda on July 6, 1995. June 26, 1995. During my stay in San Francisco, California, Maria Navarynsky ar ranged a meeting with the President of UNWLA Branch 107, Olena Bankston. In turn, Ms. Bankston quickly arranged a meeting with the members of Branch 107 and their families in San Jose after the morning Mass. During the meeting, I spoke about the 70th Anniversary of the UNWLA, the organization’s work and its public relations. Branch 107 functions well; it attempts to organize pro grams of interest to both its younger and older members. The President of the branch and her husband both generously contribute their time to the UNWLA. December 4, 1995. At the invitation of the regional council of the UNWLA in Phila delphia, I spoke about the 4th World Confer ence on Women in Beijing, China. I invited diplomat Nina Kowalska to address the group. She informed the gathering about the “Peace Train,” which women from Ukraine and other countries rode to the Beijing Conference. Ms. Kowalska also discussed the work of the Ukrainian government at the conference. F. REPRESENTATIONS June 1994. I represented the UNWLA at a banquet in celebration of the 50th anniver sary of the Ukrainian Supreme Freedom Council. “Peace Links,” an organization of the wives of Senators and Representatives, invited me to Washington, D.C. to a seminar on ’’Solving Problems Together.” Twenty-three women from the former Soviet Union atten ded. Throughout the past 50 years, ’’Peace Links” has invited women from the Soviet Union to the United States, taking them on tours of public institutions and entertaining them in private homes. The women of Peace Links are convinced that the seeds they planted in the minds of the Soviet women contributed to the eventual dissolution of the Soviet Union. During a luncheon, I spoke on the topic: Women’s Organizations and Their Volunteer Work. Among those present were 10 Russian women, 2 Ukrainian women and one woman from Kazakhstan. In response to my ques tion — What language should I speak in: Ukrainian or English? — the unanimous response was Ukrainian. After my address, several more of the women present identified themselves as Ukrainian. January 14, 1994, 1995, and 1996. I tra velled to Stamford, Connecticut, on the feast day of St. Basil, to honor the Most Reverend H. Losten, D.D., Bishop of Stanford, bringing the Bishop greetings and good wishes from the UNWLA. G. CONTACTS WITH ORGANIZATIONS IN UKRAINE June 2 to June 5, 1995. At the invitation of the President of the Zhinocha Hromada, Maria Drach, I participated in an educational and practical conference in Kyiv. The theme of the conference was ’’Women and Demo cracy.” The conference was sponsored by 68 www.unwla.org
