IRYNA KUROWYCKYJ VICE PRESIDENT PUBLIC RELATIONS A. INTRODUCTION As Vice President for Public Relations, I worked in accordance with the resolutions of the 23rd Convention of the UNWLA, which were adopted by the UNWLA Board of Direc tors. The resolutions are as follows: 1. to uphold ties with women’s organiza tions in Ukraine; 2. to cooperate with women’s organiza tions in the United States of America; and 3. to encourage members to participate in local, state and federal elections. My first assignment was to formulate committees which the UNWLA Executive verified. The following non-UNWLA persons became members of the New York Junior Committee: Yarema A. Bachynsky, Taras Fe- rencevych, Yaryna Ferencevych, Oksana Ja- rema, and Anna Rohoza. During this report ing period, two meetings of this committee took place and two reports were issued. The first report was dated November 3,1994; the second report was dated September 9,1995. The members of the Washington committee were Marta Kuzmych and Motria Slonevska. The following information is an overview of my work with Ukrainian, American, and International organizations. During my term as VP of Public Relations for the UNWLA, I also had the honor of serving as President of the National Council of Women of the United States (NCW-USA), one of the oldest wo men’s organizations in America. Through this position, I was able to expand the traditional role of the UNWLA VP for Public Relations and bring recognition to Ukrainian-American and Ukrainian Women. B. MEETINGS WITH GOVERNMENT REPRESENTATIVES August 1994: I met with the Ukrainian Consul General in New York, Mr. Victor Kry- zhanivsky, to discuss UNWLA assistance to Ukraine. Ukraine is an independent country, we can therefore only lobby United States’ legislators with the consent of the Ukrainian Consul or Ambassador. Report No. 2 was issued in this regard. September 24, 1995 : I was invited to meet the Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Gennadiy Udovenko. At this meeting, Olha Stawnycha and I requested an official meet ing, which took place the next day. We dis cussed the following at the September 25 meeting: 1. that the participation of Ukainian wo men, as non-governmental representatives, in international conferences is essential; 2. that the government should aid and encourage women to participate in such con ferences; 3. that Ukrainian representations lack a female presence; 4. that the Minister should encourage President Leonid Kuchma to appoint his wife the official guardian of the “Ukrainian Family” as is the practice in other countries; 5. that Ukraine, along with four third- world nations, did not provide data for the “Women in Parliament” map. September 28, 1994. In the company of a diplomatic delegation from the United Na tions, I attended a speech by the Minister of Foreign Affairs. On this day, Mrs. Olha Try- tyak and I also represented the UNWLA at the Ukrainian Mission. November 19, 1994. I attended a recep tion and banquet in honor of the President of Ukraine, Mr. Leonid Kuchma. December 15, 1994. I participated in a meeting of representatives of Ukrainian or ganizations with the Permanent Representa tive of Ukraine to the United Nations, Anatoli M. Zlenko. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the possibilities for cooperation with the UN. As a result of this meeting, throughout my term, I enjoyed a good work ing relationship with Ukraine’s representa tives to the UN, especially with those in the III Committee for Social Humanity and Cul ture. I greatly enjoyed and benefitted from my associations with Nina Kowalska from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. At my invita tion, she addressed a gathering in Philadel phia (see report below). Additionally, I am grateful to the Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN, Ambassador Anatoli Zlen ko and to all the others whom I had the opportunity to meet at the UN and at interna tional conferences. 66 www.unwla.org
