н СВІТОВА ФЕДЕРАЦІЯ УКРАЇНСЬКИХ ЖІНОЧИХ ОРГАНІЗАЦІЙ WORLD FEDERATION OF UKRAINIAN WOMEN’S ORGANIZATIONS Executive Office: 278 Bathurst St Toronto, Ontario - Canada M5T 2S3 Tel: (416) 366-4299 Mailing Address: P.O. Box 261 - Poetal Station "M" Toronto, Ontario - Canada M6S 4X3 STATEMENT TO THE FOURTH WORLD CONFERENCE ON WOMEN BEIJING, SEPTEMBER 1995 At the 38th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women Meeting at the United Nations in N.Y., the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations presented a state ment expressing our deep concern regarding nuclear safety in Eastern and Central Europe. We raised the issue again at the ЕСЕ Regional Prepartory Meeting in Vienna, October 1994, calling for countries of technical and financial means to have a moral and practical obligation to help the countries in transition to secure nuclear safety for the entire region. The Chornobyl disaster has shown that great threat to human existence from peaceful use of nuclear energy where design, operation and maintenance were not on par with world stand ards. Sadly, the countries that operate these nuclear facilities are burdened with reactors which they cannot afford to shut down or even modify because alternative means of energy are either too costly or not available. The world, especially Europe can suffer unthinkable consequences if a similar disaster of the same or even greater magnitude should occur. It escapes our imagination that after our dramatic and tragic Chornobyl experience there are still countries that plan to build nuclear arms and develop nuclear power stations without having concentration for their population’s health and the health of the rest of the world! The tremendous after effects of the Chornobyl explosion of 1986 are only beginning to surface. These effects will be felt for centuries to come. There are high levels of different types of cancer, serious birth defects and a high amount of premature births with serious risk to mothers and newborns. There is contamination of food production in the rivers and fields. These consequences are extremely serious to women’s health and should be addressed at this conference. We urge that in the Platform of Action for the Fourth World Conference on Women specific objectives and actions be taken to promote the full and equitable particpation of women in global action towards sustainable development at all levels and strategic objectives and actions for risk prevention and health promotion and education to counter the most serious of toxic hazards that are threatening women’s, men’s and planetary health; toxic chemicals, biological and radioactive contamination. We feel that no new technology should be applied unless there is concomitant technology to deal with any emergencies be they nuclear, chemical or biological. We recognize that it is primarily women and children that suffer the greatest long term effects of radiation poisoning, chemical and industrial waste pollution which cause yet unknown prolbems for generations to come and which poision scarce land, water and livestock, produc ing not only biological aberrations, but also severe economic burdens. The fear of health con sequences and the lack of adequate medical care has affected women’s choices regarding fam ily planning and child rearing in this region. As we begin to accept that the good of the people should be the overwhelming priority of any technical development we must address the nuclear and chemical waste issue with great agency. We appeal to the member states of the United Nations to offer concrete and practical solu tions to these serious environmental problems caused by man himself! Thank you for your consideration! 41 www.unwla.org
