LUBA BILOWCHTCHUK UNWLA SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Looking back at UNWLA’s charitable activities, it may be said that the idea of stu dent assistance and sponsorship always ap pealed to many members and branches of our organization, who have assisted students on an individual basis for many decades. Because of the interest of members and branches in helping financially disadvantaged students obstain an education, the UNWLA established its Scholarship Program — Stu dent Sponsorship Progam in 1967. The pur pose of the program was to financially aid needy and orphaned students in South Ame rica and Europe in their education. After the 1967 visit of Nadia Schulhan, Director of the Institute of the Cathechists of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Colegio Santa Olga in Prudentopolis, Parana, Brazil, it became evi dent that our assistance was badly needed in South America. It was in 1967 that the first stipend was sent to Colegio Santa Olga with UNWLA Branch 33 of Parma, Ohio, the first sponsor of our program. With the help of UNWLA membership and branches, other sponsorships followed. But it was not until a resolution was passed at the UNWLA Convention in 1969 to expand the scholarship program that con certed work began in that direction. It was then that Sofia Andrushkiw became a mem ber of the Social Services Committee, under the chairmanship of Maria Chymynets, for scholarships to Poland. Dr. Teodozia Sawycka, UNWLA Social Services Committee Chairwoman from 1971- 1981, initiated the centralization of the var ious scholarship efforts into a single pro gram. She established the procedures and guidelines, and at the same time, in an inten sive campaign in the Ukrainian press, ap pealed to the Ukrainian community for sup port for students, in South America in par ticular. As a result, many individuals and groups in the United States of America, Aus tralia and Canada became sponsors. When the UNWLA was granted a non-profit status by the IRS, a separate UNWLA Scholarship Fund was established. Irena Kaczaniwska became its first treasurer. The Ukrainian Women’s League of Australia, Charytia Ko- nonenko Branch, joined our program and forwarded funds collected from their spon sors to our Fund. Other Australian Branches followed. Through the efforts of Mr. Myron Lapka of Australia, other Ukrainians became sponsors. After visiting Brazil and Argentina with her daughter Anisa, Dr. Sawycka expanded the program there. The trip to South Amer ica was instrumental in making personal contacts with the leadership of Ukrainian organizations and defining the guidelines for the recommendations and obligations of students. Meanwhile, Sofia Andrushkiw with Olga Hnatyk’s assistance, continued stipends to Europe. At the Convention in 1981, Anna Kraw czuk was electd to head UNWLA Social Ser vices which included the scholarship program with 149 active student files from South America. Immediately a scholarship bureau was formed with the following volunteers: Dr. Teodoza Sawycka, consultant, Sofia An drushkiw, Maria Polanskyj, Marijka Hywel and Anna Kosonocky. Irena Kaczaniwska remain ed treasurer. In the fall of 1982 Vera Mycio took over the scholarships to Europe. By 1984 the number of scholarship recipients tripled and it became evident that the UNWLA Scholarship Program should be segregated from the Social Services. Thus at the XX UNWLA Convention in 1984, Anna Krawczuk was elected the first chairwoman of the UNWLA Scholarship Pro gram/Student Sponsorship Porgram and held that post until 1993. Taissa Turiansky became treasurer, Sofia Andrushkiw and Vera Mycio were responsible for stipends to Poland, Marijka Hywel, Ksenia Hapij, Olena Melny- chuk and Maria Polanskyj devoted many hours to office work and Nadia Nynka, Luba Syrij and Orysia Jacus assisted in the auto mation of the program. This was quite a task, but by the end of 1986 all accounting and student files were computerized. That year the number of sponsors reached over 500 and assisted 716 students. The Brotherhood of Ukrainian Catholics, Rev. Markian Shash- kevych Branch in Montreal, Canada, helped us tremendously and because of the efforts of Wasyl Mereniuk, certain scholarship recip ients now have Canadian sponsors. 126 www.unwla.org
