Petro Kowaliw historical/scholarly competi tion. The Kowaliw Fund was founded in 1968. It is managed by a committee with the fol lowing members: Maria Savchak, Ivanna Ra- tych, Lidia Hladky, and Chrystyna Navrocky. The Regional Council of Northern New York hosted an inter-regional conference with the Regional Council of Ohio in September. The conference dealt with the subject of cul ture and the museum. Delegates to the 1991 annual meeting of the WFUWO held in Toronto, Canada were Maria Savchak and Chrystyna Navrocky. In October Dr. Maria Beck, a longtime member of UNWLA was honored by the Michigan Association of Women’s Studies and her name engraved in the Michigan Wo men’s Hall of Fame. She was named a woman of many firsts, because she was the first woman to be elected to the Detroit City Council and the first woman to head this Council. During the second meeting of the Na tional Board, President Maria Savchak spoke about the following topics: the importance of getting new members; the usefulness of regional conferences; the proliferation of various committees in our communities to help Ukraine which ask branches and even regional councils to become members. How ever, according to its By-Laws, UNWLA can not be a member of any other charitable organization. Therefore, branches must ad here to this and only support the charitable causes for which UNWLA is responsible. The XXIII Convention of UNWLA was scheduled for May 29-31, 1993. The New Jersey Regional Council was asked to host the event. Luba Sira, member of Branch 4 will head the Convention Committee. Maria Tomorug will represent the Executive Board on the Committee. Irena Czajkowskyj will be responsible for the publication of the con vention book. In November the Education and Press Chairs organized two inter-regional confer ences with the participation of New Jersey, New York and Philadelphia Regional Coun cils. Later in the month Maria Savchak, to gether with other leading Americans of Ukra inian descent, attended a meeting with George Bush, President of the United States, who was handed a memorandum petitioning for America’s recognition of Ukraine as an independent state. The Ukrainian Museum, founded by UNWLA in 1976, is the pride of the organiza tion. UNWLA branches are major supporters of the institution. In order for the Museum to continue developing and growing it needs a new larger facility. Toward that end a fun draising campaign was initiated at a gala 15th anniversary banquet. Ivanna Ratych and Lidia Hladky repres ented UNWLA at a banquet following the unveiling of a memorial to Mykola Livycky, former President of the Ukrainian Republic in exile. In order to help finance the upcoming WFUWO’s VI Convention branches were asked to collect funds in their communities. Virlana Tkatch was the recipient of a $2,000 stipend from the Eva Stashkiv Fund to help her organize a new theatrical production, “Gas,” integrating Georg Kaiser’s drama and Chornobil. President Maria Savchak was a guest in January 1992 at the christening of UNWLA’s branch 56 in Northport, Florida. The following several meetings of the Executive Board were devoted to numerous projects such as the Convention, the exhibi tion in Ukraine of children’s literature of the diaspora, and the 25th anniversary of UNWLA’s scholarship program. The Board decided to purchase a $35,000 specialized machine slated for the Children’s Hospital in Lviv, to be delivered by the super air trans porter Mria. Luba Artymyshyn (branch 64) and Myroslava Hrab (branch 86) were invited to join the Nominating Committee. Maria Savchak took part in the ceremon ial opening of the Ukrainian embassy in Washington, D.C., and was present during the official signing of agreements between Presidents George Bush and Leonid Krav chuk. Maria Drach, a representative of the Women’s Hromada in Kiev, and her daughter were guests at UNWLA headquarters. $1,000 was presented to them to be distributed among 20 orphans in Ukraine. A conference of the presidents of Re gional Councils was held in May, 1992, which was also attended by all members of the National Board. The first meeting of the Nominating Committee responsible for the slate of officers to be presented at the XXIII Convention was held during the conference. 47 www.unwla.org
