UNWLA’s President, Maria Savchak, commem orating “Day of the Woman” on March 8, 1991. The interview was held in Kiev and transmitted on the Kiev radio. In March, Maria Savchak took part in the 65th Anniversary of UNWLA Celebration which was organized by the Detroit Regional Council. She also attended a banquet honor ing maestro Mykhailo Chereshnovsky on his 80th birthday. Vice President Ivanna Ratych agreed to help Marta Baczynsky in editing the English pages of OUR LIFE, beginning with the April 1991 issue. In May the Executive Board held a re ception for Atena Pashko, Co-President of UNWL in Lviv, who was presented with a check for $500 for the purchase of a copying machine for her organization. Education Chair Olha Trytyak spoke of her preparation for the children’s literature exhibitions at the next meeting of the Execu tive Board. One part of the exhibit would show publications from Ukraine in the Uni ted States, the other would exhibit books in Ukraine which were published by the dias pora. It was decided that Vice President Ivanna Ratych and Welfare Chair Lidia Czer- nyk will take part in the upcoming first con vention of the Children of Chornobil Foun dation as guests/observers. On May 19th a luncheon was held in honor of His Eminence Metropolitan Volo- dymyr Sterniuk, during which President Maria Savchak offered greetings from UNWLA and other organizations who are members of the WFUWO. During its June meeting the Executive Board decided to grant a $2,000 scholarship to Oleksandra Isaievych, a student from Ukraine. The Executive Board reiterated a previous statement that based on its charter, UNWLA cannot be a member of any other charitable organization. The Board also stated that UNWLA will cooperate with the Children of Chornobil Foundation, in the effort of providing furnishings for an ICV at the child ren’s hospital in Lviv. It was also decided that UNWLA will continue its fundraising activities on behalf of children and youth, the victims of Chornobil. A word processor donated by Ivanna Ratych was presented to Soyuz Ukrainok in Kiev by Irena Kurowyckyj, Member-at-large on the Executive Board. UNWLA sponsored Kiev based journalist Valentyna Smirnova to a conference of journalists held in Dobrov- nik, Yugoslavia, in June. During the September meeting, the Exe cutive Board awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the Eva Stashkiv Fund to Oksana M. Selsky, a student from Ukraine, enrolled at Harvard University. To celebrate 25 years of UNWLA’s scho larship program, Anna Krawchuk, Scholar ship Chair proposed the following action: the publication of a booklet describing the work of the program; commemorative insig nia for the sponsors; articles for OUR LIFE and other publications. The Board agreed to purchase a computer and printer for the scholarship office for $2,000. The Medical Aid Fund for Children Vic tims of Chornobil paid $1,000 to Rev. Peter Ovyd in Yugoslavia where 100 children, vic tims of Chornobil spend summers. Also, $4,000 was assigned to cover the cost of prosthesis for a young girl who had lost her legs. The Medical Fund designated $25,000 for the purchase of a blood analysis machine for the Children’s Hospital in Lviv. A drive to collect dried fruit and vitamins for children in the Chornobil area was proposed by Anna Krawchuk. Education Chair Olha Trytyak informed the Board that the travelling library for child ren consisting of 240 books from Ukraine and 45 from the diaspora has been organ ized and is ready for use. Vice-President Olha Hnateyko represen ted UNWLA in the community committee organizing manifestations in Washington, D.C., Los Angeles and Chicago with refer ence to getting the United States govern ment to recognize Ukraine as an independ ent state. UNWLA members massively par ticipated in these manifestations, wrote letters and telephoned their congressmen, senators and the White House on behalf of this ini tiative. On September 28, Maria Savchak took part in a banquet in New York City, honoring Leonid Kravchuk, President of the Supreme Council of Ukraine and 14 people’s deputies. A $2,500 first prize was awarded to Dr. Myron Kuropas for “Ukrainian Americans: Roots and Aspirations” and a $1,500 second prize went to Nadia Diuk and Adrian Karat- nycky for “The Hidden Nations; The People Challenge the Soviet Union” in the Lesia and 46 www.unwla.org
