UNWLA is the founder of the World Fe deration of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations. The VI Congress of the WFUWO was held in Toronto, Canada in the Fall of 1992. Our organization took an active part in the Con gress. We were represented by 16 delegates, while in attendance were many additional members of UNWLA with the privilege of voice but not vote. At the request of the Executive Board of UNWLA branches col lected $3,500 towards the expense of the Congress. At the conclusion of the Congress it was stated that UNWLA was the only orga nization from the United States which pro vided financial support for the event. Members of UNWLA, Dr. Mary Beck, Dr. Natalia Pazuniak, Olena Prociuk and Lidia Hladky received honorary membership in the WFUWO. Oksana Bryzhun Sokolyk was elec ted President of the organization. The follow ing members of UNWLA became members of the WFUWO Board: Natalia Danylenko — Second Vice President; Olha Stawnychy — Public Relations; Irena Russnak — Culture Chair; Chrystyna Navrocky — head of the Statutory Committee, Olena Prociuk — mem ber of the Auditing Committee. As a member of the WFUWO I am also a member of the presidium of the Secretariat of the World Congress of Free Ukrainians (WCFU), and thereby I take part in all the meetings of the Presidium. UNWLA has fully supported and contin ues to support the WFUWO and WCFU. The next, the VI Congress of the WCFU will be held in the Fall of 1993 in Toronto, Canada. In 1976 the UNWLA founded The Ukra inian Museum. Presently the institution is in a financial crisis. Cuts in federal and state aid have greatly contributed to this situation. The Museum is currently conducting an in tensive campaign to raise funds in order to rebuild an industrial building it owns into a new, spacious museum facility. Each presi dent of UNWLA is a member of the Muse um’s Executive Board, serving as First Vice President. Regional Councils and branches fully support the Museum. In conjunction with events in Ukraine, the Welfare Chair, Lydia Czernyk developed a broad range of activities. Our branches participated in these activities and fully sup ported them. In accordance with our decision, we continued to provide medical equipment to furnish an ICU (Intensive Care Unit) at the Lviv Regional Specialized Hospital for Child ren, where youngsters, victims of Chornobil are treated. So far UNWLA has purchased four such machines from American manu facturers, at a cost of $130,000. These units have already been delivered to the Hospital. This project is being realized in cooperation with the founder of this hospital, the Child ren of Chornobil Foundation, headed by Dr. Zenon Matkivsky. The Foundation oversees the purchased equipment, while each Presi dent and Welfare Chair of UNWLA are mem bers of the Auditing Council of the hospital which will, in time assume control over the resources donated to the hospital. While in Kiev in August 1992, prior to the Forum, I took part in a press conference which was held at the Antonov military air port. The press conference was called to be on hand for the arrival of the world’s biggest transport airliner, MRIA, which had brought ambulances, medical equipment, medicines and vitamins for hospitals in Lviv, Kiev and Kharkiv. The two medical machines purch ased by UNWLA were also on board. During the conference I read our press release. I also had a short interview with a reporter from CE3S. UNWLA’s welfare program supports a fund that helps the needy in Ukraine. Our organization donated $500 for the purchase of a copier for UNWL in Ukraine. From this fund we also gave donations to the Metropol itan Andrej Sheptytsky Hospital in Lviv and helped orphans. The scholarship program of UNWLA, chaired by Anna Krawchuk, which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 1992, has achieved first place in all diaspora, according to the report of the World Council of Welfare Pro grams of WCFU. The program is also being implemented in Ukraine. The welfare program of our organization also includes the Eva Stashkiv scholarship fund which gives members of UNWLA the opportunity to engage in Ukrainian studies. The contest for the scholarship is held each year. The Educational Choir of UNWLA, Olha Trytyak, was responsible for the pre-school classes for children and the kindergarten which was founded at her initiative and is held at the premises of the Church of St. John the Baptist in Newark, NJ.
