fluence our organization, but what is more important is that we have the opportunity, to a certain degree, to influence the course of these events. Let us examine our work of the last three years against the background of the above recounted occurrences: During this term three National Board meetings were held and one broad conference of the Presidents of Regional Councils. This conference was held with the aim of allowing members of the Nominating Committee to meet in their full complement before the XXIII Convention of UNWLA. The meetings resulted in many motions being passed which support the resolutions of the last Convention, and new motions which have governed the work in this, in-between convention time. Membership The growth of memebership strengthens the base of every organization. The work of the Membership Chair, Olha Hnateyko, was directed toward that end. She made every effort to maintain membership stability in branches which had organizational problems. During this time four new branches were founded. However, I am sorry to say that the number of new members is much lower than the number of individuals who have left the organization. It seems that branches make little effort within their communities to en courage women to join. The third “Ukrainian Woman in Two Worlds” conference, which was held in the Fall of 1990 was very succesful and organ ized on a high level, but did not enrich our organization with new members. The next series of such conferences must be well thought out to evoke interest in our organi zation in a broader range of women, thereby increasing our membership. The Executive Board continued to have close contact with branches and members by delegating representatives from the Board to attend Regional conferences of jubilee celebrations of individual branches. Some times when it was not possible to send a representative, we would forward greetings and an appropriate document. Regional and inter-regional conferences are very important because they provide information to our members and the community about the mul tifaceted agenda of UNWLA. During this term of office three such conferences were held. The Vice-President for Cultural Affairs Lidia Hladky and the Museum/Arts Chair Irene Russnak organized a inter-regional conference in Buffalo in which two regions took part — Northern New York and Ohio. In Newark, NJ Educa tion Chair Olha Trytyak and Press Chair Chrystyna Navrocky also organized an inter regional conference. Members of UNWLA as well as guests from the New York, New Jer sey and Philadelphia regions took part. Anot her conference was held in Cleveland, Ohio, through the efforts of Marta Danyluk, Finan cial Secretary of UNWLA and Chrystyna Navrocky, Press Chair. The conferences were well received and well organized. Their suc cess depends not only on the Chairs who arrange them, but also on the Presidents of the Regional Councils in whose territory the conferences are held. We have continued the scholarly/histor ical and literary contests underwritten by the Lesia and Petro Kowaliv Fund. This Fund is managed by the Culture chairmanship, head ed by Vice-President Lidia Hladky. During this term of office two prizes have been awarded, the first and second for a scholar ly/historical work. Also we have announced the two following contests. Our public relations activities, external and internal are producing satisfactory re sults. UNWLA is a member of the National Council of Women of the United States, the American Federation of Women’s Clubs, and the National Women’s Party. Member-at-large Irena Kurowycky, a representative of UNWLA to the NCW and a member of its Hospitality Committee for many years, was elected to the post of First Vice President of NCW. Maria Tomorug, Corresponding Secretary of UNWLA, was elected Treasurer of NCW. In 1991 at the suggestion of Public Relations Chair Dr. Martha Bohachevsky-Chomiak, UNWLA provided funds for Valentyna Smir nova, a journalist from Kiev, to attend a con ference of journalists in Dubrovnik, Yugosla via. Currently Dr. Chomiak is in Kiev where she is a guest professor at one of the uni versities. UNWLA is a member of the American Saber Foundation and through this associa tion our organization has the opportunity to send books and other items to Ukraine. UNWLA’s representative to the Saber Foun dation is Lidia Bilous. 31 www.unwla.org
