BRANCH 98, HOLMDEL-MIDDLETOWN, NJ NEW JERSEY REGION Front row: Victoria Mischenko, Ann Pedersen (President), Elisabeth Barna, and Orysia Jacus. Second row: Anna Krawczhuk, Asbury Park Press Columnist Steve Giegerich, and Dr. Margaret Zakanycz. Missing from photo: Olga Boeckel, Haylyna Jakubowicz, Rita Oberleitner, Anna Poruchynsky, Christine Roland, and Pat Zalisko. This year will mark the 5th anniversary of our branch. In the short time we have been part of UNWLA, our members have become very involved with the varied activities and concerns that are the foundation of UNWLA’s work. Over the past three years we have participated in our first convention in 1990 over Memori- dal Day weekend in Detroit, Michigan. We participated in the Ukrainian Woman In Two Worlds conference held in Piscataway, NJ. In October, 1990 to further explore our potential, we were fortunate in hosting a a small, informal gathering at the home of member Anna Krawczuk, to listen to Ukraine’s Dr. Natalia Preobrazhenska of Zeleni Svit, speak on the aftereffects of Chornobyl. In our local community, we have tried to bring an awareness of Ukraine and Ukrainians through an annual cultural display held at various libraries in the area. We have participated in several international fairs which generated discussions of Ukraine’s struggle for independence and her role in the free world once underburdened with communism and Russian domination. Our efforts to bring this information to the forefront was most noticeable in an article, “Free Ukraine’s Joy Tempered by Chernobyl”, by Asbury Park Press Columnist Steve Giegerich, who attended one of our meetings and wrote a fair assessment of the situation. Our main focus and concern over the years has been the education and welfare of our sponsored student in Brazil. All the fundraisers held on her behalf are well worth the effort when her letters to the branch arrive. In all, we’ve spent our time in constructive work for UNWLA. 209 www.unwla.org
