Branch 72 of The Ukrainian National Women’s League of America, Inc. was organized over twenty-five years ago. Mary Lesawyer and Mary Dushnyck gathered all of their friends, acquain- tences and interested women and formed Branch 72. They, also, served as the first two presi dents. These American-Ukrainian women, daughters of pioneer-Ukrainians learned about Ukrainian culture and traditions from their mothers whose values they have endeavored to pass on to their children. Just as the mothers belonged to various women’s organizations and churches, their daughters worked to follow in their footsteps. The members of Branch 72 have worked to enrich the life of the Ukrainian community and to help the UNWLA grow. They have participated in Ukrainian activities both within and outside the organization. For many years they have sponsored a Musicale at which they presented aspiring young musical talent — vocal and instrumental. It gave these budding young artists a chance to appear before an audience. It gave encouragement to choose a career in the perform ing arts, if they chose to pursue it. The members who played a big part in makinig this a success were Mary Lesawyer, Mary Dushnyck, Helen Prociuk, Anne Bezkorowajny, as well as many others who gave of their time and contributions. Over the years they made many contri butions to Ukrainian causes. They have given support to students in Brazil and in the European community, both as an organization and as individuals. They have made generous donations to the building fund of the Ukrainian Museum in New York in addition to individual contributions. Members have served as volunteers at the museum when called upon. For many years Branch 72 sponsored an annual Dinner/Dance over a Fall weekend at Soyuzivka for members and guests. This was well attended and enjoyed by all present. The members put in a great deal of planning and work into this project. This event served as a source of income for the branch. Several members, among them Olga Liteplo and Rosalie Polche have served as officers of the National Headquarters and the New York Regional Council. Helen Prociuk is a member of The World Federation of Ukrainian Women in which organization she held the office of Vice President, (SFUZO). Some of the members also have belonged to the National Council of Women. Mary Lesawyer participated in th observance of Ukraine’s Millenium of Christianity as 183 www.unwla.org
