hundred years ago as the double burden of women —work for pay outside the home and care of the family in the home. Kobrynska was, as far as I can see, the first woman to warn the socialists of this danger, that libera tion of women without women will be no lib eration at all. The future makes serious demands on our organization. First of all, we must open our ranks to the many women who justly claim Ukrainian ethnicity without necessarily speaking Ukrainian. These women, many professional and most living in areas where there is no traditional established Ukrainian community, should belong to our organiza tion. They have much to offer and our com munity needs them. That means that now, even more than previously, we will have to adjust our activity so that we can accommo date a changing membership. Voluntarism in women’s organizations is undergoing a crisis and needs a restructur ing of our own. This is a chance for Ukrain ian women to participate actively in the de velopment of the overall American women’s movement in its period of change. That, after all, is the best way we can help Ukrainian women, who have been cut off from the world. This means the continuation and strengthening of the work we do jointly with other American women’s organizations. It means continued participation in the Natio nal Council of Women in the United States, and through it with the International Council of Women. It also means participation on the local level with various compatible women’s organizations. It certainly means even greater involvement in the American political pro cess, locally and nationally, in both of the major parties. It also means involvement in the community work on the local and national level. Finally, it means making certain that the voice of independent women, united in the UNWLA, is heard within the faction- riddled Ukrainian community in the United States. 55 www.unwla.org
